This is the last post about favourite cut flowers. Tulips come in in fourth place, after the rose, carnation, and chrysanthemum. The gerbera is fifth most favourite.
Tulips grow from bulbs and have usually large, showy, brightly coloured flowers in spring. The plants become dormant in summer when the flowers and leaves die back. They were originally found in a band from Southern Europe to Central Asia but have adapted to a wide range of conditions. There are now a great number of cultivars and colours.
The main producer of commercial tulip plants is the Netherlands. Tulip festivals are held in a great number of towns around the world including Nannup in Western Australia’s south. North of that area, winters are not generally cold enough for the successful cultivation of tulips.
Best not to grow tulips from seed as it might be five to eight years before they grow to flowering size. I don't have that much patience!
The photo was taken by me in Nannup.

Tulips dont grow in our climate/country. So it would be so exciting to see those growing in a garden during a travel.

They are not suited to all climates, that's for sure.

@JudyEv I loved when we had a stop at the Amsterdam Airport, because we saw the tulip fields from the sky. About tulips I do not know if you have read the story of Tulipmania.
It is the story of a speculative bubble, which took place in the 17th century when Dutch investors purchased tulip bulbs, pushing their prices to unprecedented highs. During the tulipmania, the average price of a single flower exceeded the annual income of a worker and cost more than some houses.

@LadyDuck That would be wonderful to see the tulip fields from the air. They must have been really colourful.
I did read about Tulipmania but decided it would make the post too long. Maybe I'll do another one on it - unless you'd like to, of course.

My mom had a lot of different colored tulips growing in the yard on the farm... I've never planted any of them. They're pretty but the flowers don't last very long.

@JudyEv It doesn't get cold enough for them there, I'd bet. I don't blame you. There are lots of pretty flowers that will grow there.

@DaddyEvil My Mum always liked the challenge of growing something that people said she couldn't!! But I go for the easy stuff.

I love them. Need to get some more soon. My lilies crowded many of them out.

@JudyEv Sadly it is. But I would just place the bulbs in pots and freeze them if it wasnt.

One of my favorite spring flowers in addition to daffodils and pansies. Interesting facts! Wish they bloomed for a longer time than they do.

I love tulips and have tried to grow them from bulbs. I’d say I am do okay with it. However I seem to only get a few to pop up year after year. The soil in my garden beds is not the best.
I seem to do better with annuals. Zinnias and four o’clock so are a favorite.

There were great paragraphs about 'Tulip Mania'. People have lost a lot of money in Australia from time to time, trying to cash in on stuff that turned out to be one-day wonders. Emus, ostriches, angora goats, alpacas are some that some to mind.

Oh, wow, I think that is one of my favorites too. Although that is rarely seen in my place since they easily get dehydrated in our climate. I am just not aware if we can cultivate them locally. I saw them at springtime in NY. Every corner of their streets have them and they were really beautiful to look at.

They grow wild here in my yard it seems each year a new one pops up somewhere. They have never been planted. I hope my husband doesn’t mow them down accidentally this year as I think he did last year as well as a 6 foot section or more if peonies.

pretty picture. Yeah I like tulips too. I didn't know they came in seed form. I always thought they came only in bulbs.
