Not a great start!

Last night I went to bed early, and slept soundly - for a while. I never have trouble getting to sleep, but staying asleep all night seems to be a problem. Isn’t it odd how something so normal and natural should be so difficult?
I ended up waking about 3 am and after lying there for a while I gave up and got up to finish some work. Then at 6 am (when it was already light and the birds were singing) I went back to sleep for an hour or two.
After all that I was looking forward to my coffee and toast this morning. Then I thought I would boil some eggs to take with me for an easy lunch as I’m going to be out all day.
I have a microwave egg boiler at home (I tried to add a picture but couldn't, for some reason) which works well - I wouldn’t have believed it at first, but now I use it regularly. So I bought another to use when I’m away - however this one isn’t exactly the same, just very very similar.
I put in the water and the eggs and set it going, and I was just making toast when there was an almighty bang and the door of the microwave flew open and slammed shut again. Inside it turned out to be covered in a mass of exploded egg.
It seems that this egg boiler may require perhaps a minute less cooking time than my usual one. Unfortunately trial and error is the only way to find out what cooking time to use.
Now I have a mess to clear up and an unpleasant smell of burned egg in the kitchen. I’ve retired to another room with my coffee to let it all cool down a bit before I sort it out. Hope I can salvage enough to make a sandwich!

I have a story about a microwave and an egg.
Vince boiled an egg for our four-year-old once when I was ill. It wasn't quite done so he popped it in the microwave, sat it in front of our son who was glaring at it suspiciously when it suddenly exploded right under his nose. Although the top was off it, Vince should have punctured the sac round the yolk as well.

Gosh that must have been a shock! Things can get super-heated in spots and I guess something like that must have happened.
We used to use a microwave in the lab for dissolving things and I remember a solution once suddenly boiling up when a student took an apparently still beaker of liquid out and started to stir it.

Oh! Sorry about the mess. You really need to do deep cleaning else the smell of eggs can stay for too long.
You are right that trial and error is the way to learn
A good peaceful sleep is a blessing. We should be grateful if we are blessed with one.

I've never heard of an egg boiler for the microwave. I've made some real messes when I fell asleep waiting on eggs to boil on top of the stove, though. Do you know how hard it is to clean eggs off the kitchen ceiling?

@Ronrybs At the start of lockdown, a local free range egg producer suddenly lost all their customers (normally hotels and caterers) so they started offering home deliveries instead. That was so successful that they have continued - we get 30 eggs every two weeks (we get one or two eggs a day from our chickens as well but that's nowhere near enough - and they are currently 'time-share chickens' anyway so we don't always have them!)

I've never heard of a microwave egg boiler. Maybe if you punched a tiny hole in the end of the egg it wouldn't explode?

@Fleura I only used the microwave to defrost some frozen meals (like lasagne). I take them out the night before and place in the refrigerator and I heat using the traditional oven. The microwave was only there to occupy an important space on my counter.

Normally I use ours quite a lot. They are supposed to be more energy efficient and the egg boiler I normally use works surprisingly well. There must be just a slight difference between that one and this, or that microwave and this. I will be more cautious next time!
