Gender Please

I recall an embarrassing Mylot moment back in 2017. For a couple of weeks a member and myself commented back and forth on each other's posts, and l was unaware that the person behind the avatar was a male. I do think that when one is trying to make a cogent point in a discussion it is best to know which gender one is talking to. I also agree that over a period of time one will be able to guess who one is talking to, but in the meantime..... Of course one can always check the profile page - but then, some members have very brief profiles with no mention of gender. Have you ever mistook the gender of a member? Do you think we should identify ourselves? How important is it? Image from pixabay

I’m a female. You can call me anything you like, just don’t call me late for dinner!

@Kandae11 — as Helen Reddy sang about the senior females, “I am woman, hear me snore.”

I like to know mostly just as a way to get to know the person better. There are several members here that I mistook their genders and eventually they mentioned a husband or wife giving me a better clue.

Yes indeed, the mention of a wife or husband would give a possible clue.

I cannot guess about more than one member. They do not have a bio, they use a landscape as avatar, impossible from what they write to understand their gender. I agree that it would be useful to know.

@Kandae11 I was confused yesterday by a user who is moving to live with a boyfriend, I thought he was a man but he never said... I still have doubts now.

@LadyDuck It is confusing, because the possibility exists that he is indeed a man.

Sometimes, I can't figure out if I'm talking with a man or a woman on myLot.. When that happens, I take a guess... a lot of the time, I've guessed correctly.

@Kandae11 Nah! If they were worried about it, then they'd have a name that shows their gender or they'd straight up tell us. *shrug* Did you have any trouble figuring out my gender?

@DaddyEvil Oh no", your avatar is reasonably obvious - as well as your comments.

@Kandae11 most of the time I can figure out the gender, whether the person is married, divorced, younger, older, where they live, etc. But there are some that are often confusing even after talking to them for a long time. I just go with it and enjoy the chat

I have. Of course, in today's world gender is just an old fashioned word that is now obsolete, as it's been replaced by the PC term gender neutral

Regardless of what they want to call it , the fact remains that God made male and female and they are not yet extinct.

In most cases I can figure out "gender" by the things they say in their posts/comments. I guess mine is not visually obvious, but if anyone knows me, they know I've mentioned being a mom or something to the nature that I'm female. There have been times when others called me bro or dude here - but they never stuck around long enough to even get to know me.

Yes, I thought that someone I am talking is a woman. Until I saw the comment from the user that stated "My wife" oh, He is a guy.

On another forum my user name is male (was my dog’s name) I guess I don’t think it’s important what gender people think I am.

Knowing someone's gender won't make that person more or less popular. It is just that on a discussion site, depending on the topic being discussed, points can be made more sensibly if both parties knew which gender they are addressing.

I have run into this a few times myself, and it can get interesting to say the least if you don't pick up on it right away. I do think it is helpful for people to know, but not exactly how one would go about it necessarily. Even my own name would not necessarily suggest male (Porwest), but certainly Jim Bauer does.

It could be important, but it is also personal choice whether or not to reveal details. Yes, I have been gender confused about other members in the past and tried really hard to keep things neutral.

It happens a lot to me. I am taken as a female and soon enough they realize that I was male. I really do not mind; it happens especially when you do not reveal with them who you are.

When you think about it, as a public forum, the poster is not the only person that may be reading your message. Using general language, remembering you are in 'public', speak as you would in front of a mixed audience. Avoid getting too personal - and if you want, in time, to have more of a 'tete a tete', it will give you enough time to know an individual better and thereby avoid blunders.
