All ready for summer!

I have had this old folding chair for many years. I'm not even sure where it came from originally, I might have rescued it from being thrown out somewhere. For a long time it was rather tatty-looking, with its striped canvas faded and with a couple of holes. It was eventually relegated to the greenhouse where it got a bit cobwebby, and finally when I did take it out because we needed extra seats, Little One fell through the seat - I guess the sun in the greenhouse had weakened the fabric further! Instead we tended to use some much newer, trendier folding chairs. But now that those are some years old and getting worn out I have found that those are impossible to repair. The frame runs through big ‘eyelet holes’ in the actual fabric so the fabric can’t be replaced without destroying the frame. And even worse, the fabric has some sort of plastic coating on the back which is coming off, so every time the chairs are used they deposit a shower of microplastics everywhere! Back I went to the old cobwebby chair. I brushed off the cobwebs, cut off the remains of the old canvas, and replaced it with this tropical print which the girls chose. It wasn’t quite as simple as I thought but it wasn’t too difficult, and the result looks pretty good. I just need to find a bit of varnish for the arms to make it look better than it has in years. Now of course the girls are fighting over who gets to sit on it! I think I’ll take it outside today to enjoy the sunshine while they are at school All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

@xFiacre Your bring back Latin lessons, I almost forgot that pulchritudo means "beauty".

Good for you. Simple is often best, especially when it comes to renewing/repairing. We had chairs like this years ago.

A lot of people did, then they threw them out and bought the trendy new style ones. In the end the old ones turned out to be much better than the trendy new ones, which we will have to throw away soon as they can't be repaired.

@Fleura And then they are just landfill. More rubbish that will take forever to disintegrate.

This looks great, instead of a varnish, clean with a product to clean garden teak chairs and apply wooden oil, so it will not peel off.

Thank you, and thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I had already sanded the arms and applied the first coat of varnish before I read this. I have used yacht varnish though so I think it should last well.

@Fleura I went through some errors and trials with wood painting. I sanded and applied a yacht varnish to our fence and after a while it peeled. I tried with a product that leaves the pore open and it is lasting for a lot longer.

Nothing like a comfy folding chair to sit in on a summer day! And you did not need to replace it nice job

I have a few things that old and getting tatty, but I refuse to part with them. Don't have any chairs for sitting in the sun, I burn very easily, so I tend to avoid it

I don't get much time to sit in the sun! But we do enjoy the odd picnic.
