What a Contrast (Or, Angry, Confused, and Perplexed)

(Warning: this may be long. I’m typing what comes to mind as it comes to mind.) What a contrast. Yesterday I was celebrating the fact that my teenybopper idol, Elton John, turned 75. Later the same day millions of fans were mourning the sudden loss of their idol, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. He was only 50, an age Elton passed a long time ago. The “angry, confused, and perplexed” part comes from Twitter, which is format I truly believe should go the way of the dinosaur and the 2600 baud modem. When I went there to investigate, I found people figuratively jumping for joy over this kid’s death (like Elton, I passed 50 quite a while ago). Why? Because, apparently, the Foo Fighters required the attendees of their shows to show proof of vaccination. That. Is. SICK. No, not that the Foo Fighters wanted proof of vaccination at their concerts. That’s their prerogative (it’s still a semi-free country). Rather, as one tweet said (this is a paraphrase with the dirty words taken out), there are people who make EVERYTHING about them and their cause. (It reminds me of a cartoon in my physics textbook in college: a mother scorning young Copernicus by telling him the universe did NOT revolve around him. ) I didn’t check when Bob Saget died (I honestly have Twitter for one reason, and one reason only: the National Weather Service will tweet tornado warnings anywhere in the U.S. when they happen, and there’s no app that will do that), but apparently there were people who started the “he died of the vaccination” rumor before his body was even cold. That happened again with Hawkins’ death. Anti-vaxxers and pro-vaxxers are having a knock-down, drag-out fight over a man’s death three seconds after he took his last breath, completely oblivious to the fact that the man’s wife, children, band mates, friends, and fans are having that diarrhea poured on them at the absolute worst possible moment. You know, the Foo Fighters aren’t my musical spokesmen. I’m fine with that. Grunge wasn’t made to speak to or for me. As Paul Simon sang, “Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts.” I couldn’t name you five Foo Fighters songs if you spotted me four and made the fifth one a multiple choice question. However, that doesn’t mean that I can’t have a little bit of sympathy toward the fans of the band, who woke this morning to the news (or, worse, walked out of the concert last night in Columbia after it was “canceled due to a medical emergency,” only to learn the sad reality of the emergency later). I wish others could find a little bit of that sympathy in their hearts — if they have hearts — before they tweet. And the love of many will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12) My sympathies to the family, friends, and fans of Taylor Hawkins. Here’s a nice mellow song from the Foo Fighters

You're right. When Clinton took office it was still respectful. Until stuff happened. With the impeachment and Gingrich's contract with America, the political tone changed. The birth of the 24 hour news brought Americans partisan opinion as news and deep lines were drawn. Social Media flooded the country with political rhetoric and division and the media drummed conflict and fear into every nook and cranny. Civil discourse vanished and politeness and manners gave way to team politics. Instead of Yay for my team it was boo for your team. Not only that but some see you as an idiot or evil because you think differently. It happens here too. It's become a world where anything goes as long as it's for the team. I haven't read up on this story but it doesn't surprise me. It's just sad that people will take a tragic event and use it to advance the ball for their team, damn the people that will be hurt from the insensitivity. We have the best communication tools ever at our fingertips yet we have forgotten how to communicate.

We don’t know how to have a “dialogue” about anything in this country anymore. All we have are shouting matches.

I know some people will point to that Herman Cain Award group on Reddit and say, “Well, they did it first.” Two wrongs do NOT make a right. Never has, never will.

@BarBaraPrz That’s what Gallagher said. “Two wrongs don’t make a right. Three rights make a left.”

Well spoken/written. Some people are so utterly, utterly heartless. It's truly awful how people can be so cruel.

Thank you. And I wonder if we’ve even begun to see the level of cruelty that people can sink to.

@FourWalls It seems sometimes that we're going back to the dark ages.

I'm a fan, and it was heartbreaking. I had no idea that people were making it about the vaccine. That's absolutely ludicrous.

What was that quote in Forrest Gump, “stupid is as stupid does.” My condolences to you as a fan. He seemed like a really nice, fun guy, even if one didn’t care for the music. And the induction speech for Rush at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame he and Grohl gave is pure comedy classic!

@FourWalls - he was such a sweet and funny guy! The Foo Fighters videos were usually hilariously funny, and he was a big part of that. Thank you for the condolences.

Stupid is as stupid does. On both sides of the political spectrum. Fueled by social media sites who also take sides and suppress any views which do not fit their narrative. Emotional arguments always lack common sense.

We’re getting more and more Americans with college degrees, but the country is getting dumber and dumber.

@FourWalls In my view it's what being taught by these college instructors today which is a big part of the problem.

I learned just today who he was. But I agree with you that it is disgusting the too many tweets of people who should learn to think before they type.

I don't even know what to say. People are so caught up in stupid stuff that they have lost basic compassion.

I totally agree with you. To tweet something about vaccinations being required at a concert instead of condolences to the family and friends of Hawkins is rude and immature.

Ironic that they ask fans to get jabbed to protect each other and the drummer sticking another kind of needle in his arm for the exact Opposite

He had a near-fatal heroin overdose in 2001, and I don’t know that they’ve ever studied the long-term effects of something that traumatic on the human body. I would imagine that his heart was “older” than the one in my 62-year-old body because of that traumatic event.

I hope you will have a wonderful weekend:)

Humans are just devoid of emotions at times. Condolences to the deceased family and close friends should be given while they can mourn privately too.
