The Slap

I watched the Oscars last night and was happy for Will Smith when he won the Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams. I have always liked him and always enjoy his work. I was very surprised when he walked up on stage while Chris Rock was doing his monologue and slapped him. Rock had made a comment about Will's wife and I really don't blame Will for slapping Rock. How dare he make a comment about Will's wife and her having alopecia. He said that she should do a G.I. Jane sequel. I guess he has made comments before about her baldness. Something she can't help. I am not a big fan of Chris Rock for he does say some awful things sometimes. I hope there is no backlash for Will after this.

I didn’t watch it but I agree with Will one hundred percent. That was nasty of Chris Rock. Why would he do that?

He had done it before. Some 'humor' just isn't humorous.

Some people think that making fun of other people is funny. I´m glad that he was slapped.

Chris Rock was just doing what he has always done. Poking fun and most often, in bad taste. Smith crossed the line in physically attacking another and is little more than a thug for doing so. I understand why Smith would be upset but his response to assault Rock was childish and a crime. I lost all respect for Smith after watching the clip.

Just showed the men for who they both are, I agree he did cross a line but when it has happened before and Rock has said things like this before I think it needed to be stopped. I lost respect for him too, for about three seconds, then my better self took hold and agreed with him totally. Lashing out at others is never the best route. Will was defending his wife and I, being a woman, applaud that.

The crime is to make fun at a person who has a medical problem. Probably the right way of stopping him should be not hiring him to do that. Now he´ll know better, I hope.

@marguicha No. The crime is the assault. At rehearsals, Rock told the same joke and Smith laughed. If Smith had such a problem, he would have called out Rock then instead of at the awards. Chris Rock pokes fun for a living. Many times in bad taste. Was the joke in bad taste? Yes. Was the assault justified? No. If someone insulted one of your kids in a hurtful way, do YOU have the right to strike that person in anger? No. You don't. I think there is more to this story. I'm leaning toward it being staged.

@kaylachan ......If you saw it first hand you would have seen a glitch take place when the slap occured. It really looked staged.

Surely the Academy will see the truth in it all. Why not come down on Rock for his choice?

@celticeagle No matter the reason, you should never slap someone, just because you can. From the headline, he not only slapped the man, but swore at him, too. Which likely wasn't edited, because it's live. Common sense tells us what we can and can't do and he should've been more considerate about it. Will will deffently be feeling that one.

I missed that part (dozed part of the ceremony). But I read it all today and Will Smith had all the right in the world to Slap Rock. It is a shame when people make fun of other people´s problems

Will has apologized for his actions. I think he should have approached Rock after the ceremony and voiced his displeasure. He could have been charged with assault.

When you are worth $350 million I don't think you worry about assault charges. He may have said something to him before(this was not the first time Rock made such comments about his wife) and Will had just had enough.
