I Saw a Spoonbill

Yesterday it rained long and hard. The hollow places in the yard below turned into a vast lake and the birds were thrilled. I saw ducks, egrets, and a roseate spoonbill. I was excited because I have never seen one before. A spoonbill has a long, flat bill that it uses to scoop up food. It is pink and at first, I thought it was a flamingo. I looked at it with binoculars and saw it was a spoonbill. I love watching the birds when I visit here. Have you seen any unusual birds? Where did you see them?

The only unusual bird I have ever seen close up is a roadrunner other than that all I get to see are mourning doves the sparrows here are way to fast for me to actually see them

They look pretty cool but they eat lizards and I like lizards, they eat baby mice and insects.

The roadrunner is my favorite bird. I saw a lot of them in the Southwest. I see the shore birds because there is a small view of the water here. What do you think of the roadrunner?

@rebelann Their diet is the worst thing about them. I used to think it was funny when some of them chased our car when I was little.

I'm not able to go out or go to a part of the house I might see any, but when we lived in the other house and the back yard flooded sometimes, I would see a pair of beautiful wild ducks playing in the puddles and the male would stretch out his wings so proudly. A beautiful sight.

I had never seen one before, only in videos or images. I could not believe it was real, but there it was.

@akalinus - It happens to see animals that do not look real. I hear a cuckoo bird all the time here, but I cannot see where it is.

The spoonbill is very well named. We occasionally got an unusual bird in a birdbath which was always a reason to get really excited.

That’s neat that you have birds to watch, I hear birds chirping but I don’t see them.

I don't see those interesting birds at home, only at my son's place. At home, we do have Sandhill Cranes a couple of times a year. Not so many as there used to be. I don't know where they go now.
