Prom - Yes or No?

In 1965 I was a senior in high school and was 17 years old. One of the things that seniors look forward to, of course, was Senior Prom night. There were 1,000 kids in my graduating class; and I don't remember where prom was held. I didn't get invited to prom; but there was another option for us "losers". lol The school held a special event at an entertainment complex and rented out the whole building. We had an opportunity to attend an all-night party. They had mini golf, bowling, swimming and dancing available. I went with a friend of mine (who just happens to be my sister-in-law now); and we did everything but swim. In the morning, as the sun was rising, her brother picked us up. I think the school had a great idea by doing this for those that couldn't partake in the prom night festivities. Did you go to prom? Do you have any special memories about that night? I never went, mainly because the whole thing just did not interest me. Sorry you didn't get asked.

@porwest I'm lousy at it...I'm also a bad bowler. The only thing I was ever good at was volleyball.

@LindaOHio lol. Mini golf? I loathe that too. Actually it's not all that bad. In fact, my wife FORCED me to play a round on our first date. Look where that got me?

@aninditasen I understand. Your culture and traditions are different than here in the United States.

It's a dance that the seniors go to. It's a big deal for a girl to be invited by a guy to this dance.

That was a great idea by your school. I attended prom and it was the usual one.

That special event would have been more appealing to me - what a great idea but that option didn't exist for us. Although I dreamt about prom in my teens, looking back, I wish I never went .

@LindaOHio Wow - that's a lot of kids! I wanted to go, but in hindsight the circumstances just weren't right . . . I think I mostly blocked it out of my mind . But I did like my dress .

Sorry your prom wasn't what you had hoped it would be. Yes, the special event was fun. There were SO MANY kids there...but then we had 1,000 kids in our graduating class.

I never went to my high school prom. It was on a boat and my mom didn’t let me go from what I remember. I didn’t have anyone to go with anyway.

@LindaOHio Same here. And I didn't really have any friends in high school either. I went to my junior high prom but no date either. I went with my then friend who didn't have a date either.

You'd think out of 1,000 kids there would be someone to ask me...but no!

I went but not good memories. He had a brand new red Z28 Camaro. But wasn't worth the ride honestly. Oh well, I was there.

I bet in some ways you had more fun than the prom people. I was only 17, but already engaged to Dale at my senior prom.

@LindaOHio I know, I was much too young. I was very immature for my age. My parents should never have let me.

I just remembered something else about my senior prom. I had been chosen to be in the Select Choir (eight kids from every high school choir on the island, Oahu) and of all things, the big concert was scheduled the same night of our prom. So I had to choose which one to go to. I chose the prom, but we had car trouble and missed the first half of the prom, so I probably could have gone to both!

We had a school ball which was probably a bit similar but there was only dancing, no other activities.

We don't have anything like prom in the schools that are in our country. I only see them on movies.

Heck no I didn’t go to a prom! I have mostly unpleasant memories of school (save for the time I was in Daytona Beach), so when the opportunity presented itself for me to take three classes for my last three credits in summer school to graduate early I jumped on it.

My fondest memories are of junior high, not senior high. There were 1,000 kids in our graduating class in senior high.

I did not attend my Senior Prom. My friends and I were not part of the "In Crowd" of cheerleaders and jocks who made up most of the prom attendees. Instead, we held our own anti-prom on the beach, though no one called it an anti-prom then. I do have fond memories of that night. We all had a blast and woke up the next morning slightly hung over, wearing our damp bathing suits, and covered in sand and salt.

That was a great idea, You know I always love watching those movies where the Senior Prom is held in the school gym, We had two gyms for boys and for girls I would have loved it if the prom was at the school but no they rented a ballroom at a hotel I don't even remember where and it was not a very good prom at all,

I went to the junior and senior proms. I loved shopping for gowns with my mother and getting my hair done. The first prom was when I flirted with a senior so that he would take me, which he did. I didn't date him afterwards. I went to my senior prom with my boyfriend and another couple. I remember parking at the beach after the after prom until sunrise.
