You know, I don’t remember them signing a rental agreement or anything, but it seems I have new tenants living here. As you can see by the photo, some robins built a nest right over my motion lights mounted on my garage. It’s in a perfect place for them: out of weather, well hidden, and near a big buffet thanks to my neighbor and me and our bird seed. They’ll be gone in no time, I’m sure, but it’s nice that they’re here while their young ones hatch and grow.

It really is cool to see those beaks sticking above the nest, waiting for mom and dad.

@FourWalls You could try crawling up there and feeding them from your mouth and see what the parents say.

I hope the hatchlings survive. Speaking of birds building nests in unusal places, way back when, I had a short-term job delivering phone books (remember them?) and one house had a spring wreath on the door that seemed to have a fake bird and nest as part of it. When I got up to the doorstep, the bird flew away!

I hope they survive, too. There’s a hawk or an owl or some bird of prey in the area. That’s funny about the “fake bird” that turned out to be real!

They won't be really loud tenants, unless someone tries to get at their eggs. I hope that you will carefully be able to get some pictures of the robins after they hatch.

It’s too close to the eave to get the camera up there. But I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them to see if they start showing up on the feeding shelves in back.

@FourWalls We had bird make a nest over top of light fixtures like that, and since we couldn't see them, and the light was always beside a door, my hubby would put an empty can on that space so that would deter them from building a nest there. I was always afraid of having the birds attack me.

Look at that robin! What a delight this will be to watch. Mine are building but I haven't found the nests yet. They are hiding from me.

We’re getting ready for a lot of noise with the air show and the fireworks for Thunder Over Louisville. Hope it doesn’t scare them (and everyone else).

@FourWalls We used to have birds nest in our hanging plants on the front porch. Our old cats never bothered them. When GiGi, a feral stray, took up residence, she chased them off because she thought they were an a la carte dinner.

At the preschool, we have blue jays eyeballing the blue eggs of a cute couple of birds that have made a nest in our eaves. I'll have to research what they are. I knew last year.

Robin eggs are blue. Remember Joan Baez’s line about Dylan: “I remember your eyes were bluer than robin’s eggs.”

@FourWalls That Chinese cuisine you mentioned is from a certain kind of bird. But it is quite expensive and actually I don't think it is very popular dish for many people anyway.

@youless — I remember watching a TV program about traveling to China and the cuisine, and it seems that workers had to climb the sides of caves to extract the bird nests. It was very dangerous work. No wonder it’s expensive.

It may be, but isn’t Chinese cuisine the one with bird’s nest soup? I have a set-up in my back yard where I put out bird seed and let the various birds (I have cardinals, blue jays, robins, doves, and finches primarily) and squirrels pick out what they want. Generally I’ve found that the birds like the squirrel food, and the squirrels like the bird food.

I wish I still had the box up there. (I had old motion lights that birds had built a nest on, and my brother put a little wooden box under it to keep the hatchlings from falling to the ground some 10 feet below.)
