Saw my aunt

Hi MyLot, My dad and his sister really did not get along. We had tried a few times, but there would always be some big fight and years would go by and we wouldn't see my aunt or cousins... and so it's been. My mom however has been keeping up with my dad's sister, my aunt Joan for a little bit. We both agree caution is needed so we don't get our feelings hurt yet again, however dad and Joan were too similar - and neither mom nor I are hot heads like he was and she can be. So hopefully it'll be good this time. But we will proceed with caution. We got together with her on her birthday. I thought it would just be a short get together. But we spent the afternoon. Oh well that is ok because the visit went well -- though there have been some changes with her. I notice her memory isn't as good with either recent things or things from the past. It's ok, at least she's pleasent and not angry. It was a little sad though. I recall Joan as being very ... I struggle with the right word. Not arrogant, but.... sophisticated. Classy. Usually having the cutting edge of electronics, and gadgets. She still looks good - though she is aging. She's 79. And gadgets, well, poor dear couldn't figure out her flip phone charger ... that's ok.... I fix it :-) We went to a thrift shop (one of her favorite things to do) and she bought me a baseball hat I liked. How sweet. Actually very like my dad. So I'm happy, but cautious with her. Maybe we can salvage something resembling getting along. Here is a picture found online of actress Lauren Bacall - who reminds me much of my aunt

Some people are just hard to figure. You never know what could have made her that way in the past. Maybe beautiful women are just difficult. I know my mom was and she looked like Liz Taylor. Your aunt is obviously quite beautiful. I hope you continue to get close and can keep an eye on her. Has she got anyone else to make sure she will be okay?

It's so true. Very perceptive observation. Her, and my dad both had rough childhoods. Wow your mom looked like Liz Taylor, beautiful but a pity about being difficult. Thanks -- I''m hoping we slowly see her more and more. Her son is nearby and her daughter about an hour away. I'm surprised they weren't there for her birthday.

@FayeHazel She is probably not close to them either. My mom was always a bit cold toward me. A bit hard to explain, and I was an only child go figure.

@bunnybon7 True, I think in earlier days at least she was fairly controlling over both, maybe that's part of it. Sorry you had that experience with your mom. Sometimes we never know what triggers cause people to act like they do

She is really sophisticated. You are cool to respect her still despite all that.

Oh yes, very stylish Auntie. Thanks - I know her and my dad were through a lot as kids... I'm hopeful that if we are cautious things will be ok :-)

Some relationships are always going to be a bit twitchy and needing caution. I hope you are able to continue to see her from time to time.

When I saw the picture, I thought. 'Your aunt is Lauren Bacall'!

Ha ha... well.... almost :-) Right now Joan, (aunt) has her styled a little different, and has some more lines and wrinkles, but if her hair were done like this and if she had a bit of make up - she'd look really similar to this photo of Bacall :-)

Age can be cruel, but I'm glad time has softened her. I'm sure she was happy to spend time with you guys.

So true. I've been thinking lately how it is unfair how bodies seem to age. That is a beautiful way to put it though. Yes, this time she seemed grateful to see us, and very pleasent - at least age is making her a bit more delicate :-)
