Are you salty or sweet?

No, I'm not talking about your "personality", I'm talking about your cooking methods. Do you use a lot of spicy spices or are your meals a little milder than some? I guess mine are a combo, although my spicy dishes aren't as spicy as I'd like, but husbands have to be taken into account, lol. I admit I do use a lot of sugar in my cooking. It seems to be a southern thing, I think. I add a little sugar to spaghetti, soup, chili, pimento cheese, tuna salad, potato salad, chicken salad, and of course lots of sugar in sweet tea. But if I had to choose only three spices to have to cook with, it would be salt, black pepper, and bay leaves. My son in law is a great cook, he was a chef at one time, but he doesn't use black pepper. I'm thinking, "How in the world can you cook without black pepper!" I know myLot is a global community. What are your favorite spices for cooking?

I like to use spices when I cook but I can't have it too spicy anymore. My favorite spices are garlic powder (or fresh), onion powder, salt and black pepper ( I use black pepper in or on almost everything) basil for my spaghetti sauce but the one thing I don't add to my food/cooking is sugar (nope not even in my spaghetti sauce)

And here I thought we'd probably cook a lot alike, lol. But I also use black pepper in about everything.

@1creekgirl I think we probably do cook similar with just minor variations on some things. At least we both agree on the black pepper

I prefer spicy and salty dishes to sweet dishes. I don't really like side dishes that taste sweet. But if it tastes salty and spicy I really like it.

@1creekgirl All spicy food will be my favorite. Especially the seafood cooked with lots of chili. I also like to eat salted fish, which is eaten with spicy chili sauce. Hm..yummi.

I use different spices according which kind of cuisine I am cooking. I use black pepper when I cook Italian. Sugar is not something I often add to my food, I do not even add sugar to my coffee.

@1creekgirl - The only sugar I like is the sugar in the cakes, pastries and cookies. But I never abuse.

A little salt, onions and garlic. I've never heard of someone adding sugar to spaghetti, soups, chili, chicken salad or potato salad.

I've never thought of putting sugar into the food items you mentioned. Interesting! Three spices I use quite a bit are oregano, lemon pepper and garlic and herb. Oregano and lemon pepper go great on pizza, garlic and herb spice on chicken. I substitute Necta Sweet for sugar in my ice tea.

@1creekgirl It's like putting an equal or sweet and low in your coffee. A saccharin type product.

I have a pantry full of spices and seasonings . . . my favorites depend on what I'm cooking. But "overall" I'm probably more on the salty side (not as much as my mom though, she put tons of salt in everything). I might put some sugar in certain curries or sauces, but other than that it's more of a dessert/baking ingredient for me.

@1creekgirl I do notice that in some "savory" recipes that sugar is an ingredient but I often omit it. I even drink coffee or tea without sugar.

I don't put any spices in foods while they are cooking because often I share them with my kritters but I do add salt now and then on the meal I make for myself out of what I've cooked

Hubs and I don't like really spicy food; and I don't put sugar in anything but spaghetti sauce. I use Morton's Nature's Seasons salt quite a bit.

I would have to go with salty over sweet. But even then I use very little actual salt in my cooking. I use a variety of spices and herbs to flavor most things.

I don't cook many main meals but I love my rice pudding with cinnamon and nutmeg. I'm mostly a sweet person and don't like really highly spiced meals. Poor Vince takes my tastes into account when he's cooking much as you do your husbands.

I put black pepper in everything, it's as essential as salt. If i make sweets at home i make them without sugar, i try to eat healthy. But I'm guilty if eating sweets out sometimes. And when it comes to cooking, i like curry and thym. Separately. And if cheese was a spice I'd say cheese too . I add cheese to almost everything.
