"Philadelphia Freedom" was written by the amazing duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin and was released in 1975. It was written as a favor to Elton's friend, Billie Jean King. At that time she was a part of the Philadelphia Freedom professional tennis team. Taupin stated that the song had nothing to do with tennis, patriotism or Philadelphia soul. However, the song was interpreted to have some of these themes regardless: This Philadelphia Freedom From the day that I was born I've waved the flag..." The song peaked at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canada RPM Top Singles chart. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons

I've never really been into Elton John, despite my surname! I like some of his songs. But I've never heard of this one.

@LindaOHio That doesn't surprise me! Some people think of Ben Elton. We've even had phone calls in the past and they say "Is Ben there please?"

This is one I don't know. People sometimes insist on putting interpretations on songs.

My mother even loved this song! What a great tune!! The 45 label said “with love to BJK and TSOP,” and you were supposed to figure out what that meant. The B-side was Elton doing “I Saw Her Standing There” at Madison Square Garden with John Lennon….not that I had the 45 or anything…..

Another popular song by Elton but not among my favorites, I know I heard it a lot on the radio way back when,
