Getting out more

I used to be out on my bike all the time - not on epic long rides, but just several times a day here and there. So I was happy that I was getting enough fresh air and exercise. But recently I realised I haven’t been out so much. I still thought I was regularly riding my bike, but then when I actually thought about it properly I realised most of a week could go by without me leaving the house except to work in the garden or walk to school (which is only 5 minutes away). I had been doing a ‘big shop’ by car, and if we needed one or two things my partner normally walked to the local shop. Apart from that I hadn’t needed to go anywhere much! Now the weather is very pleasant and perfect for cycling, but my problem is that I simply can’t make myself go out for a ride ‘just for the sake of it’, I have to have some necessary destination. Whether it’s seeing a friend, doing some shopping, volunteering at the theatre or even going to the recycling centre - some purpose to the trip. So I’ve been trying to make myself some aims! It also makes perfect sense - cycling to the town centre from here takes only 15 minutes, while driving is simply out of the question due to the extortionate daytime parking, and the buses are only every half hour (and I hate waiting! and paying £4 each time when I could get there for free!) while walking would take 45 minutes each way and be really hard if I had much to carry. I can also go to the smaller town in the opposite direction, also in 15 minutes, the supermarket is only 15 minutes in a different direction as well, and the recycling centre is 10 minutes - only about 5 minutes more than driving to any of them, especially when you factor in parking. Of course I can’t carry as much stuff at once, but I decided I would try going more often instead as an excuse to get out more! So this week I’ve been to town twice, and to the supermarket once and plan to go again today for stuff for the weekend. I am enjoying being out in the lovely spring days, and I don’t have to spend too long in the shops at one time. Then there is the added bonus that I have seen all sorts of interesting things when out and about - will write more about that shortly! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

I used to do my grocery shopping by bicycle when I lived in Guelph, but soon after moving to Hamilton, I broke a bone in my foot so had enough trouble just walking, also it was a hassle taking my bike out of the back shed, through the house and out the front door, so didn't get back to cycling. And when I moved to St Catharines I found that the tires had gone flat, so had to get a pump, then found out the back tire wouldn't hold air... So now that I've got it back (someone stole it after my shed blew down) I guess I'm just gonna have to get back on it one of these days.

@Fleura There is a saying in German, "Kaum gestohlen Schon in Polen." Which translates as, "Hardly stolen, Already in Poland." Of course, most Poles are honest and nice people. Yet, unfortunately, there are quite a lot of crooks who steal whatever they can get and transport it across the border. My relatives live in this region and know about this. Once several men carried(!) a car across a brook which marks the border between the two countries.

After all that hassle I think you are going to have to, to make it all worthwhile! That looks like a very useful vehicle. I'm impressed you got it back. Where I live is the bike theft capital and it's rare to get a bike returned.

Well done, I find it almost impossible to do any kind of exercise just for its own sake.

@TheSojourner It's easy to find that your world kind of gradually shrinks without you noticing, until before you know it you are practically house-bound! That used to be a 'disability'; now it's practically become normal for many people.

@Fleura I am feeling lucky because we are at level one with regard to the pandemic situation. I cannot do it for not being in this situation.

I got my bike out a few days ago but got dizzy and wrecked before I got out of the yard. Now Pretty won't let me go bike riding.

I love cycling and would often go for it in the morning for exercising. We have few cycling trails here near my house. I wish we had cycling tracks here and it was safer to ride cycle to everywhere. I would prefer that to driving my car.

There is a cycle track here alongside the dual carriageway, but apart from that I don't usually use them. They have created some in town but they are mostly in stupid places such as right through bus stops, or they just end with nowhere to go, or they force you to stop at every junction (not necessary if you cycle on the road because then you have right of way). So normally I just ride on the road.

I love my bike; I find walking awfully slow in comparison! But glad you are getting out and about by whatever means suits you!

If you enjoy using a bicycle and you feel sure and safe enough to go around pedaling, why not? I have never been good, I am sure I would have an accident the first time I go out.
