A long day on the tractor - not

I wrote about how, in the 1980s, my husband and I lived on a few acres in Esperance, south-east Western Australia. We both belonged to the brass band. Quite a few of the members were farmers and would discuss their day when we had a break. When seeding time came around, the men would spend long hours on their tractors ploughing and seeding their paddocks. We didn’t do any cropping but we did have to plough our fire-breaks. One night the men were talking about being on the tractor all day and Vince said that he hadn’t got off the tractor till 6.30 that evening. The men were a bit sympathetic until he said he hadn’t started it up till 6.15pm. At least they laughed and didn’t kick him out of the room. The photo is of the last tractor we had.

I have the feeling that Vince enjoyed to tease his friends.

@LadyDuck Thanks. We are more used to our new home now. On May 26, we will have been here 12 months.

15 minutes would do for me! Course tractor has a whole new meaning in the UK, just lately!

You've lost me. What does tractor refer to there now?

@Ronrybs Oh, okay. It might have made the news here but I could have missed it. I can imagine the guy might have found proceedings pretty boring. Vince bought a second-hand golf set from a church bazaar affair. The owner had passed away but no-one checked the bag. There was a pair of dirty socks which was okay and a paper bag with the most XXX-rated magazine in it that we'd ever seen! It was pretty funny at the time.

@JudyEv I knew it made the news in the US, so I thought it would have made it there. An MP was caught looking at 'naughty' stuff on his phone, in the House of Commons, not once but twice. He said he was looking for information on tractors. He has since resigned

@JudyEv He's mostly mowing grass in the big field with his tractor and uses the riding lawnmower for the yard. We have a garden, but uses his tiller or ? for weeds.

@1creekgirl Sometimes, the grass seems to be springing up behind the mower. It's amazing how fast it grows.

Is he growing crops or just mowing grass? I don't remember you being on a farm.

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope you had an enjoyable day too or perhaps it isn't Mothers' Day there. Vince likes to make people laugh if he can.

@CarolDM We grew some vegetables but also had a big orchard. Mum bottled (canned) a lot of fruit each year and would make enough jam to see us through till next summer.

@JudyEv I never did much except watch. I did work in the garden all the time. We had lots of potatoes, corn, greens, peppers and tomatoes.

I’m sure the only Tractors you deal with now are the music band. And you probably like it that way, too!

The farmers who were in the band would all harvest their crops when the time came. We only had a few acres so never grew any crops.

That's very nice. Farming is the best thing to do. It's the backbone of economy. I also like farming, I have a small kitchen garden there at home where I plant vegetables and fruits. Have a blessed day

I grew up on a farm and always enjoyed the work. I'm sure you enjoy working in your kitchen garden. It is very satisfying to pick fruit and vegetables from your own garden.
