10 Beatles Songs - #3

I am including "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for a couple of reasons...not because it's one of my favorite songs but because it highlights the simplicity of the Beatles' early music and how it evolved into much deeper and more complex music. Another reason is because it was the first American #1 hit. I remember holding my transistor radio under the covers on my bed and listening to this song and others by the Beatles when I should have been asleep! "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was released in 1963 and was written by Lennon and McCartney. This is the song that was responsible for the start of the British Invasion in the US. The British Invasion was "a cultural phenomenon of the mid-1960s, when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom and other aspects of British culture became popular in the US..." It placed #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the US Cash Box Top 100. This tune became the Beatles' best-selling single worldwide. "Oh yeah, I'll tell you something I think you'll understand When I'll say that something I wanna hold your hand" Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons The video below is a live performance.

I was 12 when the Beatles mania arrived in Italy at the end of 1963 and I could not understand all the excitement about the "Fab Four". I still cannot understand. May be it was only because they were different.

@LindaOHio - I always liked more the Rolling Stones and a few Italian and American groups. There are not many Beatles songs that I can say to really like.

This was the first Beatles song I heard. At the time I loved it but now it's not nearly as great as it once was.

It’s simple, sure. And it still sounds good all these years later.

It's been hard to just pick out 10 songs. Trying to get a mixture of all their sounds.

I saw an interview with Sir Paul recently in which he stated that the lyrics they wrote were memorable because they had to remember them. In the context of the documentary, this line came across as hilarious because it was so true.

I was never a huge fan of the Beatles, I like the ones that went on their own later on and did a much better job.

I think that that was the first song I heard from The Beatles along with Love me, do. I agree that they had simple lyrics but the music was very good. Still my favorite from that time is Twist and shout.

I agree. Those are all good songs and different than what we were hearing on the radio at that time. I also remember She Loves You being really a big smash hit!

I'm stuck in the middle. I was born when the Beatles were still together as a band but were no longer touring. And I was named after one of their songs. So I like a lot of their music and appreciate their popularity. But, I cannot understand how any musician would have found them influential. The Beatles never packed that kind of punch to me.

@LindaOHio, I know that has been said of them. But I still do not get it because (to me), the music of The Kinks and others was so much influential when it came to the changes in music.

@Chellezhere The Beatles broke ground for a lot of other groups to come to America during the British Invasion. I respect your opinion.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." A song that started it all. And when "She Loves You" came out it started the Beatlemania craze in the U.S.
