Frugal Living: Great Buy on Strawberries

United States
May 13, 2022 8:59pm CST
Today I bought a 4 lb/1.8 kg clamshell of beautiful, red, sweet strawberries for $7.99. There were 56 strawberries in that clamshell. That works out to about 15 cents per berry. I had a bowl of six of them tonight for my dessert. Tomorrow morning I will be cleaning and preparing strawberries for my freezer. I'll look forward to using them in my smoothies. Photo is my own.

I love good fresh strawberries. One time during the season I go wild and make homemade shortcake and homemade whipped cream, we enjoy it with a bowl of fresh berries...heaven!

Yum! We got a good buy on cherry tomatoes. My grandson ate all of them and I didn't get one. Those smoothies coming up sure sound good.

I really need to get the frozen bananas out of my freezer. Those don't last forever like some things do!

@TheSojourner ........Can you devote a week to having smoothies so you can get rid of the bananas?

Awesome! You are smart to freeze them . . . I have a habit of letting them go bad (though I had the intention of eating them "soon"). Because of that, I only get 2 lb at the most. Was that Costco?

No, that was at the commissary. I have the same problem with the berries, but I've been in the mood for them and since I'm not eating bread I started eating berries. I froze about 2 lb of them the other 2 lbs are gone! LOL I did share some with rgd, as we had some for dessert and then I sent him home with about a half pound

@TheSojourner I guess berries are heart healthy, and so delicious (and cheaper) when in season - good time to eat 'em all up now .

I buy the wooden case of 1 Kg of strawberries and the price is $ 4.99 (I am glad that Swiss Francs and $ are 1 to 1 now - no more calculations). To use for cooking I buy frozen strawberries, they are very good and they cost the half than the fresh ones.

They had 2 lb clamshells, so about your kilo, that were the same price yesterday. I opted for the larger so that I could freeze my own. I know that it's something I will definitely use.

@TheSojourner - This morning we have to go to our self storage to move a few things. In the afternoon I will pick up the strawberries in the garden. Three hot days and they are all turning red.

I know it's not as inexpensive as when we were living down there in california. But for up here that's not a bad buy.

@SonjaRae I know that some others down south are paying $1.59 per pound. With shipping and all that is going on these days, I think $2 lb is fine.

Whenever I buy stuff like strawberries they always go bad before we use them up. I need to start getting them on sale and freezing them.

It keeps them a lot longer. And then I use them like ice cubes in my Vitamix instead of using regular ice cubes when I make smoothies.

@TheSojourner I also should probably invest in a vitamix at some point.

@thislittlepennyearns you might be able to find one on marketplace... a lot of people get rid of their other machines when they upgrade to the newer ones. Or, they go on sale at Costco quite often.

Congrats on the berries! I will probably buy some later this week. Actually, if I get my behind out of here early enough, not looking likely now, I will check to see if they have some at the Farmer's Market.

The farmers market around here, is more a street fair that is organic small farms that cost a whole lot of money. I still like going and supporting them when I can, but it's too expensive right now. And I have a hard time getting my rear in gear, most days! LOL

@TheSojourner I always check to see if I can smell them when I am buying even from a farm market or the auction. If I cant then I dont buy them.

Very nice treat! Strawberries are delicious and rich in vitamin C. Tomorrow I'm going to eat strawberries as well, I don't know how much they cost because I didn't buy them myself. They shouldn't be too expensive as most are local. We're lucky, I guess.

Since everything comes up here from Mexico or california, 4 lb for $8 isn't too bad at this stage. I've seen them for 3 to $4 a pound up here
