Yesterday, despite the rain, and since we couldn't go camping, Sophie, the missus, and I went up to Cary, NC, to the Dog Expo. It was an outdoor event and, yes, it did rain a little while we were there. The rain didn't seem to bother the exhibitors or the visitors any. After nearly two years of being stationed near Tacoma, WA, it didn't bother me at all.
One of the exhibits K wanted to try with Sophie was the AKC Trick Dog aptitude test. She was wondering if Sophie might have the aptitude for it. Having recently earned her AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title, K thought Trick Dog would be a fun next pursuit.
As it turned out, having earned her CGC meant Sophie was already 1/2 way to her Novice Trick Dog (NTD) title as five of the requirements for the CGC were also part of the NTD event. Sophie only needed to show she could perform 5 other tricks.
The "tricks" are actually skills the dog can learn, not just goofy things they can do. Sophie was able to demonstrate the 5 additional skills to the AKC volunteer who was also a licensed judge for the event. Our little Corgi breezed through them as if she'd been practicing for weeks.
So, we not only found out Sophie has an aptitude for becoming an AKC Trick Dog, she earned her first Trick Dog title and is now, officially, an AKC Novice Trick Dog and can add NTD after the CGC to her registered name.

That had to be a great surprise that she was ready for it.
