"Hound Dog" was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Leiber said that the song only took about 12 minutes to write.
The best-known version of "Hound Dog" was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1956. It became one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling approximately 10 million copies worldwide. It was simultaneously #1 on the US pop, country and R&B charts. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1988; and it is listed as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll".
The song was written from a woman's perspective in which she berates "her selfish, exploitative man". Her man is the "hound dog".
"When they said you was high classed
Well, that was just a lie
You know, they said you was high classed
Well, that was just a lie
Yeah, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine"

I never could talk about Elvis for many years without adding "my love" to his name. Hound dog was one of those songs that I danced when parties were part of our Saturdays all the time

An interesting thing: Homer and Jethro, under a pseudonym (Jack Turner and the Granger County Gang) recorded this on RCA three years before Elvis did!

Elvis gave a twist to many old songs. One of his first "Blue moon of Kentucky" was just another country song before Elvis. And American country music means nothing to me as I´m not American.

@marguicha — Bill Monroe claimed not to like those long-haired rock people, but after Elvis did “Blue Moon of Kentucky” Monroe redid it at a faster speed!

@FourWalls Really? Homer and Jethro? Blue Moon of Kentucky was pretty good. I like Patsy's version better though.

Not among my favorite songs by Elvis but I do love that photo. I loved this one song by him that was not too popular Susan When She Tried
