Do You Still Write Checks?

United States
May 25, 2022 10:58am CST
This thought popped into my mind this morning as I had to write out two checks. One was to put in my middle daughters birthday card and the other for my house property taxes. Two checks and two stamps and they went in the mailbox for pickup. I rarely write a check anymore since I switched to online billing payments. Going through my bank to pay bills is so convenient and easy that I rarely even think about sending checks anymore. With all the ways to pay things these days will a check become a thing of the past?

Yes, I still write checks for some things, like rent on our house and when I pay for our meds at the pharmacy. I want a paper copy showing I paid for those things. (The property manager keeps "suggesting" I make an account online so I can pay her that way but I'd rather not.) Most of the time I use my PayPal Debit card to pay for stuff now. It's attached to my checking account and is easier and quicker to use.

You definitely need a record of payment for both your rent and your meds. If I'm not paying bills online then I use my bank debit card for 99% of everything else. I rarely have any cash on hand either.

@Marilynda1225 We do keep some cash on hand, just in case.

As technology advances soon we will be doing away with many of the things we are accustomed to.

It definitely looks like we're heading in that direction. My grandkids pay for most everything through their phones. I used to worry that they would never learn how to adult and write a check but it seems as if it won't be necessary much longer

I just made our house payment, with a check from my own personal bank. Also, I wrote a check to put in Chad's Birthday card, like you did for your daughter. Nope, I don't write checks often.

When my daughter gets my check she'll use her celll phone to mobile deposit it in her bank. Technology certainly is advancing faster than I can keep up with.

The only checks I write are for our housekeeper, physician co-pays and license plates. I'm sure there are some others; but those are the main ones.

There seems to be less and less things to write checks for these days. I forgot that I sent a check for my vehicle registration at the beginning of the year.

@Marilynda1225 I like the bank bill pay. No running to the mailbox or wondering if your payment will be received on time.

We have two or three places we write checks. I do not want to solely depend on doing things online, because things can happen, like a crashed modem.

NO, checks are no more used here in Switzerland, I think it's already 6 years that we do not write checks anymore. We can deposit a check if we receive a check from another country... and it takes forever to be cashed.

I have rarely written checks for years. The last time I did was as a gift for my niece's wedding.

@Marilynda1225 I thought I wrote a response here. Either I did not or it was deleted. I hope checks will always be around. I prefer writing a check rather than using my credit card. I do not like to use my credit card a lot and it seems like there are places that only take credit cards. If i can write a check then I will do it.

@Marilynda1225 I hope not because I like to write them so can make payments and not use my credit card a lot. My bills are supposed to go out of my account at the bank as arranged so do not pay them in person. The property tax I should get a discount and may pay it all at the post office. When you pay at the post office it is cheaper but they still take out money from your account.

Yes, I still write checks. I guess I am one of the last holdouts! I do pay some bills online though and it's nice not to have to worry about those bills as they are paid automatically.

I think I stopped using them around 1990

Haven't written a check for years. I mainly pay bills via online banking. When I shop, I use credit card or Octopus, a stored valued card.

I don't write checks these days. We have various apps through which we can pay, also one has an option to transfer money through the bank account. It's very convenient to pay online rather than to go to the bank and drop the check there. Also, the money we pay online goes into the payee account instantly unlike checks which take time to get cleared off from the bank.

I haven't written a check in years now that you mention it. Anything that will come out of the account I provide a pre authorized debit form for, and the bills just get paid online. Checks have become quite expensive up here, that is because there are so many different ways of paying for things, electronically mainly.

Yes, on occasion I do. For motor vehicle registration renewal, Magazine subscriptions, my township water bill. Like you using online payment has made writing checks obsolete. And we don't need any stamps, right
