"Are You Lonesome Tonight" was written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926. It was first recorded by Charles Hart in 1927.
It was recorded by Elvis Presley after his 2-year stint in the US Army and was released in 1960. RCA Victor executives did not think that the song fit Presley's new style; but the song was Marie Mott's favorite (Colonel Tom Parker's wife).
It hit #1 on the US Billboard Pop Singles chart and #3 on the R&B chart.
Two lovers have "drifted apart"; and the singer still loves her; but she doesn't love him:
"Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you..."

I love the one where Elvis messed the words up (“do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair”) and started laughing and couldn’t stop. And Homer & Jethro’s opening line of the parody: “Are you lonesome tonight? If you are, serves you right.”
Not a favorite, but there was a time where recitations were big, so it fit.

Yeah, I saw that about the bald head. Hadn't heard about Homer & Jethro's parody. Funny,
