It's That Time of Year

In my household, it is mattress cleaning time. (I have had a real problem with mattresses since our bed bug adventure that lead to the Purge of 2014.) I was reading about the best way to go about it and found some disgusting information. Did you know that an adult sweats 26 gallons a year? That moist and warm accumulation makes for a great nest for bacteria and fungus to grow. Recent lab tests from a 7-year-old mattress showed 17 million units of bacteria per square inch. Stap and E.coli can be found in mattresses. Along with your skin the skin of any animals you allow on your bed, and their hair can be found on your mattress. Fleas and ticks can even inhibit your mattress. Twice a year we need to take our mattresses off the frame and lay them up near an open window. Vacuum seams and crevices. If there are any spots treat them with 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap to one cup of warm water. Enzyme-based pet odor remover can help or sprinkle a box of baking soda all over the mattress and leave it out by the window for 24 hours.

@Nakitakona ........My own knowledge and after doing this for many years. Also, a site that I use a lot which is consumer reports. I do occasionally check what Wikipedia has to say but rarely only use them.

I have always vacuumed our mattresses annually. I keep a quilted mattress pad over top of the actual mattress, which I usually replace every spring.

Good idea. Replacing that pad each year is a great idea.

@celticeagle This is the sort of thing that keeps me feeling most unsettled when staying at a hotel. It’s bad enough sleeping on a mattress that contains my own 26 gallons of sweat, dear knows who all has been sweating (and worse) on a hotel mattress?
