Cravings

We all have them, right? Sometimes we don't even realize we are craving something. It sounds good and we eat it. Take for instance the most craved food which is chocolate. It has "feel good" qualities. Chocolate has phenylethylamine in it and regulates the body's release of endorphins. This gives us a mood lift and also has a calming effect. Salt is another food that is commonly craved. The desire for salt can just be the result of dehydration which is the body losing water, salt, and electrolytes. It is a good idea to be sure and drink plenty of water daily to avoid dehydration. The sudden craving for salt can also be due to more serious conditions such as sickle cell anemia, diabetes, and heart disease. Caffeine is a highly craved natural stimulant. It stimulates activity in the brain which causes the release of adrenaline. After the surge of adrenaline wears off you want to recreate the effect of preventing fatigue and dependence on caffeine is born. You could eat something high in protein and whole grains to build your energy instead of continuing to drink coffee. Many times we get cravings because there is something going on in the body that needs to be addressed. It is important to listen to what our bodies are telling us and respond appropriately. If you do so you will be apt to find solutions that are healthy and satisfying.

It also doesn't hurt to give into the craving every once in a while, too. It's not going to kill you to have tea or coffee, or to have some chocolate once in a while. So called healthy alternatives don't always remove the craving.

No, the trick is to do all things in moderation. I eat anything I want but all of it is in moderation.

I don't care for the dark ones. I am a truffle lover.

About once a year I want a chocolate cream pie and just have to have one. So I either make one or buy one.

I fully agree that it's important to "listen to our body", it knows better what we need to eat.

Thank you for your informative article. Right now my body craves a corn dog and potato salad because I'm hungry; and it's not lunch time yet!
