"Blue Moon of Kentucky" is a waltz written by Bill Monroe in 1945. It was recorded by the Blue Grass Boys, which was Monroe's band.
In 1954 Elvis Presley's team was looking for a song to release with "That's All Right". Bill Black came up with "Blue Moon of Kentucky". Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black turned it into an upbeat, bluesy tune. Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, said "Boy, that's fine. That's fine. That's a pop song now."
The premise of the song is that the singer's lover has left him; and he wants the blue moon to bring her back:
"Blue moon, keep on shining bright
You're gonna bring me back my baby tonight..."
By October of 1954 "Blue Moon" scored in the top 10 in Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans.

Elvis’ version prompted Monroe to re-record it from n a more upbeat manner.

@LindaOHio — I would post it, but I don’t want to give you a headache. (It is bluegrass, after all.
