A few weeks ago I talked about riding the mountain coaster in Pigeon Forge, proclaiming I wasn’t too old yet. Today I found something I AM too old for. For the first time in I don’t know how long (I truly cannot remember, it’s been that long) I had an exercise-induced asthma attack today. Doing what? Riding a bicycle. For two stinking blocks. Although my lungs have forgiven me (once they got their dose of albuterol), the rest of my body is raising 50 shades of holy heck with me. I’m glad the bicycle rental place let me give it a trial run up and down the residential street before I rented it. I was absolutely ELATED to discover that one of our players, Kevin Lacey, is being inducted into the Pro Putters Hall of Fame this year. Wow, is that ever overdue. Both times I won the Legends tournament he was the pro champ, so I got to share those magical victories with one of the best I’ve ever seen. I’m not kidding, this guy is a genius putter. I’m so happy for him. It looks like “PTS1,” as they’ve been calling it, or just “The Disturbance” (sounds like a good punk or metal band name, if you ask me ) has made it out of Florida and things are drying out. “PTS” means “potential tropical system,” as it didn’t get to the point where it got the first name of the season (which is “Alex” this year). Speaking of names, the only name retired from last year’s hurricane season in the Atlantic was Ida. One of my dearest friends in the world is named “Ida.” It was a nasty storm, and a no-brained that the name would be retired. (And here’s some worthless trivia for you: the letter with the most retired names in the Atlantic is the letter I, with twelve retired names: Ione, Inez, Iris, Isidore, Isabel, Ivan, Ike, Igor, Irene, Ingrid, Irma, and Ida. You’re welcome. ) I have a pulmonary appointment next week, so the asthma attack came just in time. I don’t know if he’ll be amazed or pleased that I had one. I’m sort of both: pleased that I was trying to do some exercise I hadn’t done in ages, or amazed that I can’t remember how long since the last one. At any rate, I hope he’s happy with my weight loss progress, which is really helping my breathing. So that’s about it for the evening, and the week here. I’m watching the surf in Hawaii. Y’all have a great evening!! My theme song, by Little Feat:

I did end up lying on the ground. I have to talk to this gravity person and have him leave me alone.

That was very nice of them. Apparently I’m not the first person who couldn’t handle it.

I am sorry that your lungs wouldn't let you ride a bike too much. Glad the rental place did let you try it before you had to give them some money. Interesting that many storms with letter I have been retired I wouldn't have guessed it. Happy for your friend Kevin.

Kevin’s a terrific guy, super sweet, and GOOD at the game. I’m very thankful I found out I couldn’t handle the bike before I went chugging off to Cherokee Park with all those hills. Oh, and it was a hybrid/electric, too….so imagine if I’d had to do ALL the pedaling myself!!!

Oh, no! I know the feeling, although I was much younger at the time. I had an unexpected asthma attack thirty-four years ago when I was dancing around to Miami Sound Machine's "Conga" while baking or cooking something in the kitchen (because, for some reason, people frown upon us baking and cooking in a Porta Potty). My asthma is mild, so I did not need an inhaler, but this attack happened in Florida, and I had not been living there long, so this strong inability to breathe was a first for me. Thankfully, I had a pot of coffee nearby, and a cup of that was able to do the trick. Good luck with your pulmonary appointment.

I met a friend in a bar in Chicago, and he asked me to dance with him to “I Lie When I Drink.” I was completely out of breath by the end of the song (which is about three minutes long ). The funny thing is I never had problems when I lived in Florida with my asthma. Now, granted, when we lived there when I was a teenager I never lived more than four blocks from the ocean. More significantly, it wasn’t the Ohio Valley!

@FourWalls My son lives in Indiana just outside of Chicago, and he thinks I would be fine there. I am fine in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. But the further south I go the worse my asthma gets.

@Chellezhere — if you put ten asthmatics in a room you’ll get 14 different stories about their condition, what sets them off, where they feel better, and what medicine works or doesn’t work.

Glad you're ok and going to see your doctor soon. Heard about Alex in news, was hoping it would disipate in Pacific, before Mexico and stayed very light. We're having sunny weather this week forecast. I'll be heading for doctor blood test draw Wednesday or so, then regular doctor visit 16th. Hope yours and my doctor visit good!

I do not have the balance to bike. Last time I tried I fell off when I stopped. Ouch. I know I feel better when I get some exercise. I think it is going to be behind the lawnmower for now.

Oh dear sorry to know you could not take the bike for long. I get to also see a pulmonologist soon. I cant use those inhalers they do the opposite for me. I remember the song..cute.

It took a long time to find inhalers that didn’t bother me. The only side effect of albuterol is Jerry Lee Lewis (a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on). Glad you like the song. One of my favorite Little Feat songs. I thought it was funny back then. It ain’t too funny now.

Thank you. I’m fine. It wasn’t too severe, and responded promptly to the rescue inhaler. I didn’t even have to threaten it with the nebulizer or the Epi-Pen!

At least I know better than to even try to ride a bike!! But only because I've never been able to ride one well at all.

One of these days, hopefully soon, I’ll learn that, in the words of Nat Stuckey, my can-do can’t keep up with my want-to. The ground hurts at this age.

I'm sorry you had an asthma attack. Congrats to Kevin Lacey. I saw a pic of Miami which is under water. It didn't have to be a tropical storm to be destructive. :-( Your doctor should be very pleased with your weight loss. That probably would help my breathing too.

Too bad you have to endure asthma. My Mom suffered for years. Always had one of those Primatene mist inhalers in her hand. I wish you luck with your next appointment.

I wouldn’t have known I couldn’t do it anymore if I hadn’t tried. It didn’t cost me anything except a few bumps and bruises (as opposed to paying $500 for a new bike, or $3,000 for an electric hybrid).
