Australia has crackpot politicians too

This post was prompted by some of DW Davis’ remarks (@DWDavis) about some of the way-out US politicians that get elected despite some weird views. I usually avoid political and religious posts but I thought I’d tell you a little about one of our would-be politicians, Clive Palmer. Clive Palmer is a Queenslander and the 7th richest Australian with huge mining interests in several states, including Western Australia. Cutting a long story short, he formed his own political party, the United Australia party, and is reputed to have spent between $A70 and $A100 million dollars on the recent election campaign. This is a huge amount for an Australian political party. He tried to force his way into Western Australia when we had our borders closed due to covid then took our Premier to court for defamation. This was thrown out of court but didn’t endear him to West Aussies. His candidates were probably well-meaning people but most wouldn’t know how many states we had. How anyone would want them in parliament was beyond me. Anyway, he won no seats, and the party flopped even more spectacularly than at the previous elections. Thank heavens that, for the moment, Aussies aren’t inclined to elect crackpot candidates. Long may it stay that way. Photo was taken by me at our previous home.

That's great that his money didn't buy him a seat for now anyway. Love your picture.

Many Australians, and particularly West Australians, have no time for him at all.

@JudyEv if he runs again maybe he won't try to use as much money and then loses again.

@MarshaMusselman He had a go once before but only managed to win one or two seats. This time he went all out.

Money talks, I hope you can continue to have good politicians. I was reading yesterday that the second richest man in Russia has not been hit by the "sanctions" because he owns nickels mines and most countries badly need nickel (for their cars, phones and so on). Luxury objects are more important than giving bread to Africa it seems. I am disgusted!

@JudyEv I had to read twice to understand. There is nothing to understand. He is cut out from the sanctions voted by NATO countries.

No surprises. I'm sure you get them the world over! Boris Johnson has just won a vote of no confidence. That means he's staying unfortunately. But people are saying so many people have no longer got confidence in our Prime Minister and that he should still go. I saw a man in town on Friday with a T-Shirt that said F**k Boris on it!

He has - to burn and to waste. He could do a lot more good with it if he wanted to.

Some of the candidates have a particular barrow to push but there is no way you'd want them running the country.

Palmer sounds like one of these politicians who wanted total control of the country. Not sure how weird that is but is definitely misguided and as you state he paid the price for his decision. Many politicians here will talk a good game to get elected again but do nothing to help their constituents. Alexandria Cortez (AOC) is a prime example. She espouses socialist/communist ideology, a philosophy which has led to economic ruin of many third world countries. But that's not the weird stuff. Here are a few examples of what her focus is on instead of the people she represents. AOC appears in Vanity Fair in outfits worth $14,000 to curse Trump out. AOC recalls being awakened to her 'indigenous heritage.' She is a Latino. AOC tests positive for COVID-19 after partying in Miami maskless. Can't say the district she represents should be happy to have her fighting for what they need. I don't post politics at all and only occasionally comment to inform or agree with what's said and try not to criticize. Because arguing politics produces no winning argument only discord. I'll stick with my music, trivia, and fun posts instead. Much more enjoyable

He is from the other side of the country but has mining interests in our state. He comes swaggering across here when we were locked down due to covid. Our Premier was doing a great job managing the state but had to fly east for the defamation case - and then Palmer expects West Australians to vote for his party!! I don't think so. But you're right. It's best not to get involved in political debate.
