It Just Hit Me ...

... that I graduated High School 43 years ago today. I still remember sitting on a folding chair on the EA Laney High School football field that evening, wearing my cap and gown over my shorts and t-shirt. It was much too warm and humid to dress up under the gown. The details of the graduation party will be left to your imagination. Suffice it to say that I awoke the next morning with the first and worst hangover I ever had. I did not make it to my tenth or twentieth reunions. When my thirtieth rolled around, I was back in NC and in touch with some of my classmates on Facebook. I decided to go. What struck me as odd was the way certain of my female classmates who wouldn't have given me the time of day back in 1979 were so happy to see me in 2009. Those now grown women hugged me like a long-lost friend when the girls they had been wouldn't have given me a second look. The best moment came when I was talking to some friends and heard a vaguely familiar female voice ask, "Doug, is that you?" I looked up and saw my high school girlfriend, whom I hadn't seen or spoken to since graduation, holding out her arms to embrace me. We hugged and I saw, over Gail's shoulder, K looking at us with daggers coming out of her eyes. Fast forward 10 years to our 40th reunion. Gail and I have stayed in touch over the 10 years between and have even gotten together for coffee on the occasions I visited Wilmington. K and Gail had become friends via FB and my wife insists my old flame sit with us. It's been 3 years since then. I've seen Gail once in the meantime. I wonder where I'll be when our 50th Reunion comes around in 2029. Have you been to any of your school reunions? What did you do if you ran into your old flame?

I haven't been to any if indeed there were any. I am a long way from home, a long long way in many ways. Glad you keep that connection and that your wife is okay with that. My old flame from high school got me on Facebook once and swore up and down that he still loved me, but of course we never met again, states and lives away.

A colleague of mine reconnected with her hs sweetheart on FB after her divorce. He lived in a nearby town and they started seeing each other and got married after a very short time. Sadly, things didn't work out and she divorced him, too.

I have noticed that the same groups that hung out in hs still tend to hang out at the reunions. The jocks, the cheerleaders, the band people, and the JROTC guys (my group). 40 years may have passed, but things haven't changed that much.

@DWDavis Looking at pictures of ours not very many are even going to the reunions. The last one was 30 dollars a person to attend. That is way to much to see people I never talked to

My old flame was my first husband, went to a different school, deceased 25 years ago. I have gone to no reunions. I left nothing behind that I would want to revisit. Cynical this morning. I am glad that both Gail and K saw something in you that is worth holding on to.

My condolences on having lost your first husband so early in life. K feels much the way you do about her high school. She's never had any intention of going to her reunions.

No. I have never been to any of our reunions because I don`t like going out on a crowded places. I`m an introvert person and enjoys being at home than going out

I understand that feeling. My wife is much the same, though she did go with me to mine - I think to keep an eye on me and the girls I knew back when - she has never been to any of her own.

I don't even want to do the math when it comes to the year I graduated high school I never went to any reunions and haven't connected with anyone via FB or otherwise. I did stay in touch though with some of the girls I went to nursing school with. Glad you had a good experience with your reunion

I've been to some reunions and found much the same as you. High school antagonisms have gone out the door since those days which is a good thing.

It is nice how we are all friendly now. Perhaps it is because there seem to be fewer of us with each reunion and the number of pictures on the Memorial Table grows. Petty high school gripes lose their meaning when we consider whom we've lost.

My fiftieth will be coming up in a few years. Where did the time ago? I know several classmates have been lost through the years.
