Alcohol Top Ten: Whiskey River (#3)

This morning, about 7 AM, I heard footsteps on my roof. That could only mean one thing; the roofers were here! I rolled over and went back to sleep once the “big noise” ended. When I woke up a little before 11, they were gone. They left me a new roof! I’ll raise of glass of tea to that! Someone else might want some alcohol, so here’s the next song — which Greg sort of wanted — on the list of favorites with an alcohol in the title. #3: Whiskey River - Johnny Bush I say “sort of” because he was expecting the Willie Nelson cover. That’s right, cover. Willie didn’t write this. When I saw him in 1984 he opened and closed with this song, but it’s not his (although he made it his own, as he usually does with most songs he didn’t write). No, the late, great, Johnny Bush wrote this and first recorded it five years before Willie’s 1973 rendition. It was on a little Texas label called Stop. In 1972 RCA picked it up and released it, making it a pretty good-sized hit for Bush. And we all know what happened once Willie did it. Pure Texas honky tonk. Whiskey River Written by Johnny Bush Recorded by Johnny Bush From Undo the Right, 1968 (Re-released, 1972) (Famously covered by Willie Nelson, 1973) Feeling the amber current:

I'm sure Willie was happy he covered that tune. I read they were close friends, and they both enjoyed a top twenty country hit with their versions of this tune. As they say, what are friends for, lol. P.S.- Good tune

I’ll say this, I love Johnny Bush’s voice MUCH more than Willie’s.

Once they got away from right over my bedroom I was fine. The Navy will teach you how to sleep though a lot of things. It was overcast and relatively cool today, so I don’t think there was any hunk showing off his body up there.

Ah, yes many a time in my younger days I have floated upon a whiskey river. The version I know best is by Willie Nelson

That’s the rendition most people know, but Johnny Bush’s was the first I heard. As I mentioned in another response, when I saw Willie he opened and closed with this song, so it’s sort of synonymous with him.

At first, I thought maybe Santa and his reindeer had stopped by early but glad you got a new roof by the time you woke up

@PhredWreck — explains why they set a new speed record getting my roof on today. I’m sure they won’t wanna be on any roof next week. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

Happy for you and your new roof. My Dad often played the Willie Nelson version.

Most people don’t know Willie covered it. Kinda like “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” a lot of people think that’s a Willie song but it’s not.

That's amazing that a new roof took such a short time to install. It's good that it's done and dusted now.

It’s supposed to be in the upper 90s next week (36C), so I’m glad they had an overcast, comfortable day to work with. The fact that they didn’t have to take any Gatorade breaks probably helped them get done quickly.
