Gift/ party bags

It was Little One’s birthday not long ago and she invited a few friends for a treasure hunt followed by a trip to the woods to play and share a picnic. Necessities for the party were of course picnic food, birthday cake and party bags. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy those cheap plastic party bags that just go straight in the bin (unless you are me, in which case they stay in the kitchen drawer for years in the hope I will one day find a use for a small plastic carrier bag with a childish picture). Neither could I bring myself to spend over £1 each on pretty paper bags (which may well also go in the bin for all I know); I would rather spend the £1 on something to go in the bag. In previous years we have made paper bags from old magazines, they work out rather well (as shown) and one small friend was so pleased with hers that she used it to go to school for weeks afterwards! We always seem to be making them at the last minute though, which gets a bit stressful. Each time I think that we should make some in advance, and that perhaps we could even make extras, but of course it never happens! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

This is such a great idea and much less wasteful.

Thanks. You know most of these things go in the bin anyway so why not make them out of waste to start with

@JudyEv I know, it's crazy. We save all ours of course. You would hope that with the cost of living crisis people might start to think twice about throwing stuff away, but some people just don't even realise there is an alternative!

@Fleura That's how I regard wrapping paper and even greeting cards really. Most end up in the bin.

I just love that idea. I remember in my hubby's family we used to do a gift exchange, and to keep it secret you wrapped the gift you bought in newspaper. Today newspaper is hard to come by.

That's a good idea to make them anonymous. Yes you're right, newspaper is definitely not as common!

What a good idea, colourful and unique for each child. I am just as bad at saving things for an unlikely event. I still have lots of plastic carrier bags from the time they were free

Me too. I use them as bin bags but then I don't throw them away, I'm careful not to put any horrible sticky things in the bin (if I do I slip them inside something else like a biscuit packet) so I can empty the bag and use it again and again.
