Parable: The chicken farmer

Chickens always come home to roost, so should we

John Samson was a chicken farmer, who sold and bred many different species of chickens. When he was old, having spent his whole life in this field, he would have liked his only son, Isaac, to have followed in his footsteps, and taken over his business, for him. This didn't happen, as Isaac hated chickens, and he had actually taken on a look of a vegetarian, not wanting anything to do with the eating of any animals. His father was disappointed, and so he closed his business down instead. He retired, lived for a few more years, and died. Should we allow our beliefs to overrule our duty, and is duty, fulfilment of our karmic direction, really the right course for our lives? Do we create more karma by following beliefs, rather than duty? Yes, we must obey the will of God, for our lives, rather than following our own wants, and beliefs, about what we think the direction of our lives to be. Duty always comes before beliefs. Photo Credit: The photo used in this article was sourced from the free media site, pixabay.com "It is the duty of a good shepherd to shear his sheep, not to skin them." Tiberius, (42 BC to 37 AD) a Roman Statesman said this. Likewise, it is the duty of a good son then to support his father, not to kill him. Chickens always come home to roost, so should we.

These happen in Asia too. Parents have dreams about their children rising high in their lives but they forget each individual is different. A few are the exact opposite of what their parents are and it is disastrous for them to just follow in their parent's ways. I have always left it to my son as regards his life choices except to tell him he has to find a meaningful life on his own accord. I find increasingly parents have become aware that this serves them and their children best nowadays. My parents left it to their three children to chart their own paths but had set good examples by living an honorable life. In the back of my mind, I was determined not to let them down

This happens with sport still too. Parents force their kids into a sport like tennis, or golf, thinking it will bankroll themselves too, I guess. Yes, if a parent lives a good honourable example of how to live a good life, the child will learn best by this example.

@Shiva49 Yes, I do not like that idea of the parents discouraging their children to copy them either, that too, causes trouble. Some billionaires, do not give a free ride to their kids, but make them earn their own incomes too. They do not give out handouts, such as cars and houses to their kids. I am not sure, about that approach either, as if my father was a billionaire, and he made me live the tough life, without giving me some perks, I would not think much of my father for treating me like that either. Wealth can be a headache, whatever way you look at it.

@innertalks Some parents even try to discourage their children from taking up the sport that they had excelled in to avoid comparisons with them I recall Susi Susanti & Alan Budi Kusuma, Indonesian Badminton players, doing that. Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf wanted their children to live out their lives and find their own niches to excel in even.

No parent should expect their child to do what they did for a living.

I believe that God has a purpose for each one. And it is possible to live this purpose and continue to honor your father and mother. Parents are spiritual intercessors for their children in the world. They have spiritual authority over us. Therefore, we must always respect them.

@Aiana18 Thanks. That's we'll said. Yes, we should respect and honour our parents, and realise that they have been chosen for us by God too.

Yes, good parents will give their children the freedom to be themselves, and to live their own lives, even as God gives us this same freedom too. We should still respect our parents, though, and not hurt them, by ignoring their ideas, and advice. We need to listen to guidance, wherever it comes from, then by listening to our inner self, in league with God, live our own life, as God wants us to live it, and as we are called, and guided, to live it by God, working with our soul, or higher self too.

Today is Father's day and your statement on son's duty to his father holds more water.

Yes, it is Father's day, today, June 19, in your country, and in America too. We celebrate it in September here. (In Australia) A son ( and also a daughter too, of course) should respect and honour his father, and his mother, the Bible tells us, and we would do well to obey that commandment of God's as best that we can do so.
