Some Changes Were Made in the Warehouse

He had to go. Even for me, despite my disdain for not having a warehouse guy in place—the last incident was severe enough that even I had to say, "this guy is a liability that we simply cannot afford." To make a long story short, he placed a pallet with two ZF gearboxes on it that weighs roughly 850 pounds each on the top rack 16 feet in the air. That was the first no. Apparently when he placed the pallet onto the rack the cross boards fell through and one of them broke. The pallet was basically held up by the half of the broken board that fell just right. It was the only thing keeping the pallet in the rack—but both drives shifted and were essentially on the verge of coming down completely. He did not tell anyone about this and just left it there. That path between those racks is a frequent walkway for our delivery drivers to use our restroom. At any time that single piece of board could have shifted or given and that pallet could have come crashing down with the weight of all 1700 pounds potentially killing someone. We frequently use other parts of the rack for large and heavy water tank storage. While it is never the intention to "jar the rack," sometimes getting other things down you do often "bump" the rack. Any of those "bumps" could have been just enough to bring those gearboxes down as well. The firing offense was not necessarily that he put the pallet as high as he did. It was not that he necessarily had the mishap with the cross boards falling through causing the pallet to nearly fall then. The firing offense was that he did not tell anyone what happened so that it could be fixed and dealt with. To be fair it was not the first time there was something not right that he did not communicate, which added to the infraction. Not that it was required nor necessary that I was asked my thoughts on what to do, I did appreciate the fact that my thoughts were considered. My recommendation or input was clear. He had to go.

Big time, and this happened to simply be the final straw.

@RebeccasFarm You really can't. It sucks that now we have to go out there (the sales team), but the alternative would have been much worse if someone would have been hurt or killed.

I spend half my days at work correcting the safety violations of our overnight crews. So as I was reading your post I was cringing, knowing I go through exactly the same thing. But as a manager I can’t afford to ignore it or look away, I have to correct it for liability and safety reasons. A frustrating part of my job.

@porwest At work, we always joke about all the safety protocols that we have in place. The joke is, "well, we have this rule for a reason. It means some idiot did something and got hurt and now a new safety rule was created." We joke about it, but we know that being safe is serious work. I work in the receiving department of our business, and we have been accident-free for close to 1200 days now. That's no small feat considering we are running fork-lifts and other power equipment all day and night long, unloading and loading freight, and doing all kinds of physical work.

Yeah, you really can't ignore safety. People tire of it calling some of it "petty," but then complacent Tom gets an arm chewed off somewhere and it all makes sense why it is harped upon.

@moffittjc No. I'd have to say 122 days is remarkable considering that environment. I hope it keeps going. But yes, many safety rules DO seem stupid. But of course you are absolutely right. They are there because someone has actually done something to make it a rule worth noting. "When working on electrical outlets make sure the power is turned off and you do not have one foot standing in a bucket of water."

Wonder what his reason was for not telling anyone about it.

It seemed to be a pattern with him. But not sure why. Backed into a pole with the company truck at a customer's delivery, for example, and never said a word. The customer called us because it was so loud and scared the crap out of him. We waited for him to tell us, but he never did, so we asked about it and he said he did it.

You can't take a chance with safety. He was definitely a liability.

I felt bad for him, as anyone would. But there were other issues before this and he just wasn't getting it. I hope one day he does or he may have a long career ahead of him full of disappointments.

When I came to this job I of course came from a more corporate environment, where I had been much more involved with safety as an issue. It has been my top priority from day one, including at this company. Everyone should be able to go home with all their parts and alive. That's the bottom line for me. Safety is job #1.

It was a necessary evil. It sucks I now have to leave my office to work out there—not by myself of course. But it was not something that could be overlooked in this circumstance.

Yeah. It was a bad situation. This one was a very big one. As I told the boss, he did not have an option here. The kid simply had to be let go. Telling us about what happened when it happened would have saved his job momentarily—but based on the "pattern" he was on, it would have only prolonged the inevitable.

That could have resulted in a tragic accident. Fancy not telling anyone about the mishap.

That really was the biggest issue, aside from the fact that he had a pattern of not telling anyone when something happened, like backing into a pole and bending the bumper on the company truck that we only were aware of because the customer called to tell us he did it.
