And You Thought New Yorkers Were Rude

United States
June 22, 2022 7:19pm CST
There was an unexpected knock at my door. It was my next-door neighbor bringing two homemade chicken ranch tacos she'd made me for dinner. Receiving that dinner from her and the gloxinia plant from my ninety-six-year-old upstairs neighbor (who was a Welcome Wagon Hostess) made me miss those good old days.

I can't compare rudeness to the kindness your neighbors showed you.

You live in New York. You know people here are as sweet and as rude as people are everywhere else in the world.

@Chellezhere I was looking for the rudeness you were shown since moving in.

@sharon6345 I know. I went to Mass today for the first time since moving up here in February 2021, and the priest at this Catholic church (the closest church to my apartment) was so rude that I will be going to the Episcopal church from now on.

@Chellezhere A long time ago, those nice uses were normal. Now nobody cares about their neighbors.

I did, and they were good, but because of the ingredients, I should not eat Ranch dressing.

Yes, movies and television have created a lot of false narratives - examples are that all New Yorkers are rude, all Southerners are polite, and people from Oklahoma are a bunch of hicks. You can also bet your sweet bippy that there is a Minnesota mean and not just a Minnesota Nice.

@Chellezhere I think this happens in all countries, the movies create a lot of false narratives... all Italians are Mafiosi and all Italians eat pizza and spaghetti according to the movies.

@LadyDuck You forgot espresso and cappuccino. All Italians drink those too - NOT!

Yes, it did. But, I have known our property manager for nearly a year and a half, and he has also known the residents here at least that long and warned me about their back-and-forth behavioral issues, so I know to be watchful of her. It was funny. I had been in the community room talking to two other tenants. We were leaving when she walked in, saw me, and started chatting away, so I responded as she and I continued toward our apartments. Then, she said her legs were about to give, and she needed to sit, just as another tenant whose dog she had been watching walked up, so I said to have a goodnight and went into my apartment. And about five minutes later, she showed up with those chicken ranch tacos.

As a Floridian who travels to NYC very frequently, I had always heard the stories of how rude New Yorkers were. But my real-life experience has been just the opposite, I have found them to be the nicest, most helpful people around.

I am from between Philly and Trenton, NY. My son was born in Jax, FL, and raised there until he was a few months shy of fourteen. We moved up to Philly when he was 17. He got a job, and about a week after he started, he came home and said, "you know what, Mom? You were right. Southern people are rude." But that was not exactly what I said. I said southerners are rude too. We are all rude. But that is only when we want to be. Otherwise, everyone is kind and helpful.

@Chellezhere There is rudeness everywhere you go, if you look hard enough for it. I tend to look for the good in each community I visit.

Yes, it was, and since she had just told me she had to sit because her gout and fibromyalgia were getting to her, I wasn't expecting it at all. Less than five minutes earlier, she was leaning onto the wall and her legs in extreme pain. But when she brought the food, she was bouncing around like Tigger.
