Short Story: A Zen tale about obsession

An obsession steals some Zen from you

The old Zen master, Arnolth Freedmanz, had always been obsessed with his zen, and his zen study of koans, until another Zen master came into his monastery one time, and gave him another koan "When the obsessed are obsessed, where has their zen gone?" The old master thought about this, and then, he was no longer obsessed with Zen, but he allowed it to possess him instead. He became a new Zen master, a better one, if that is indeed possible, at his already advanced age. "Without obsession, life is nothing." John Waters, an American writer, said this. But, with obsession, you cannot become fully enlightened, as the visiting Zen master knew. Agree, especially an obsession stemmed from hatred or for revenge. That's not healthy for sure.

Yes, obsession fueled from bad emotions is a force for evil. I do not think that there is a healthy form of obsession either, as all forms of obsession are about obsessing, and placing us on the extreme edge of balance, and we risk falling off then, and losing our rational minds too.

@ihasaquestion Thanks. I tried to paint a picture of how an obsession affects us. Fanaticism is related to obsession too, l think.

@innertalks I like how you put it. I couldn't have explained it any better than that.

Obsession can't be good. It can cause a lot of problems.

Yes, I think that too. We do need some extra focus at times, and a certain discipline too, to be able to fully reach our potential in some fields of endeavour though. But, being obsessed about anything, is usually a recipe for disaster, as it unbalances us away from normalcy.

Yes, l prefer to be balanced too, but, at times, in the past my collecting of things has become a little too much sometimes too, perhaps not obsessional though.

An obsession with anything can peg/pin us down losing sight of the bigger picture of life. Learning to let go is the path towards enlightenment.

@Shiva49 If we are in a full lift with others though, it is not a good idea to let go there, unless, we spot an old lady, nearby, that will be blamed for it. There are other meanings to let go too, and sometimes it is better to hold on, and not to let go!!

@innertalks Earlier times. our life expectancy was much less. Now we like to have " the bulldog's grip", with abundant help from modern medicines to hang in here. It is said when the push comes to the shove, we just let go looking ahead. I recall when I got into the teens, I was neither here nor there till I decided to let go of my childhood. Our parents also want us to grow up fast!

@innertalks Yes, let bygones be bygones than hold on to the hurts with a vice grip. However, some hurts do replay in my mind for the unfairness of it all. I just go through them not to deny their existence deeply ingrained in my mind and even percolating to my heart.

Obsession is predominantly geared to negatively and irrationality. Obssessing for anything drags one to his downfall.

Yes, l would mostly agree that obsessions are negative, but l can see a possible benefit to some obsessions. Someone with an obsession to be scrupulously clean, probably would not get covid, or some other diseases, for example.
