Ways To Keep Yourself Cooler in a Heat Wave

July and August are usually the hottest part of the summer. I try to find ways to stay cooler if I need to be outside during the hottest part of the day. When I was young I didn't really think about it too much. One time I put tea on my legs and then fell asleep out in the sun. When I woke up both legs were beet red and hurt for three days. Thank goodness for aloe vera. Here are a few tips I have found to stay cooler during the heat if we need/want to be outside: * Staying hydrated should be at the top of your list. Drink sports drinks that have electrolytes in them that will help to replenish the ones lost via sweating. Cut down or eliminate caffeinated and carbonated drinks on hot days. They actually dehydrate you. * Dress in loose, light-colored breathable clothing. Cotton is your best bet because it allows air to circulate in and out of it. * Know where cooling areas are in your community. A swimming pool is a nice place to go to help cool down. * Keep your house at between 72-78 degrees. If your home is chilly with the A/C cranked then walking out in 99-degree weather can be shocking to your body. I hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer. Picture courtesy of Google.

The hardest thing for me and for many people is drinking enough water. I hate water!

Have you tried it with fruit juice in it? I usually put some lemon in mine.

@celticeagle I used to drink cranberry juice 1/2 juice and 1/2 water; but it's too many calories and too much sugar.

One thing that people don't think about (because they believe the opposite is what works) is regulating body temperature by drinking hot beverages. One hot July, I had to walk fourteen miles round trip to pay my electric bill. I chose to drink hot coffee along the way. My friend who accompanied me decided to drink Coke and could not understand why I never became overheated and maintained my ability to breathe.

Good idea. Too cold is not good for us in hot weather. This is true.
