Things To Know About Sunscreen

I know I need to use sunscreen before I go outside but how much and how often and all that? Here are the answers I found: * Choose the highest SPF in the sunscreen you choose to use. Don't think that a lower SPF will boost your body's levels of Vitamin D. Studies have shown that levels of vitamin D are not affected by a higher SPR sunscreen. * Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside. Then reapply every two hours. Be sure to apply the sunscreen under clothing edges to ensure good coverage. * Whether you use roll-on or spray sunscreen you should apply for several passes over any given area. Two-finger lengths of sunscreen to cover your face and an entire shot glass is the right amount for your body. Apply it liberally and remember more is more. * Discard old sunscreen if it has a pungent or unusual odor and, if its consistency has changed. For example, if it has become grainy or runny. Or if it has changed in color. * When choosing a sunscreen ensure that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Perfume-free and fragrance-free are best. * Sunscreen should not be the only protection against skin cancer. It is smart to set in the shade and use an umbrella when possible. I only go out early in the morning, when the sun is not yet out.

@celticeagle - I try to avoid the hot hours of the day. I never liked staying in the sun.

I hope you find some that works for you. I don't use it like I should, but then again, I try to avoid going out during the hottest part of the day.

I don't go out. I will try to remind my daughter to get some. She has an olive complexion and tans easily. Never burns.

@celticeagle I am the same way. I have burnt a few times, but that's mainly because of what I was lying on at the time. Mother Nature and my body do a pretty good of soaking me through and I am literally dripping with sweat.

That one is always so expensive. I try to find one in 35-50 SPF.

@celticeagle I agree. It is 10 dollars for a not so big of a bottle. But I have a permanent scar on my leg that needs to be protected from the sun as much as possible.

These are good tips to protect ourselves from skin cancer. It's always better to cover up our bodies when we go out.

Thank you for the good info. Oddly enough, it is the lack of or underuse of sunscreen that keeps it from affecting Vitamin D formation. When properly used, high SPF sunscreen may reduce the amount of Vitamin D formed but not to a critical level. The skin cancer prevention benefits far outweigh any Vitamin D loss. An SPF of 50 is about as high as you need. More than that shows very little additional protection.

I've always wondered if sunscreen blocks vitamin D. But yes, non-perfume scented or I'll feel sick from the strong smell.
