Long break... fascinated with triangles.

Good morning from this side of the planet
. It's 10 AM here and I sit alone in the Resource room of my school. That's basically my work corner in the school where I take one to one sessions with children who need extra help or therapy with their special needs.
I generally get a 45 minutes break around 11 here. But today one of my special need child scheduled for 10:15 session is absent. And he would be not coming for couple of more days. He has developed some symptoms of cold and school is strict about keeping any unwell child at home till he is well. Even common cold and cough have to kept away at home for the safety of everyone. We have to take all safety measures in this pandemic.
So, here I have more than an hour break before my last session of the day starts at 11:40. I have nothing much to do. I plan to spend some time here, some time arranging my work table and cupboard. I had a plan to do that after work time but better to use this free time. Or maybe do it tomorrow at the same time as tomorrow would also be free as the child won't come tomorrow either.
This is the picture of work of one 9 years old from the morning session. The child is born with low muscle tone and so delayed on all developmental milestones. He is fascinated with triangles. Today we did some bit of phonetic readings, a little bit of imitation of actions with pictures and then he showed his interest in writing numbers on board. He has recently accomplished the skill of drawing lines and triangles and leaves no chance to show that off
. He is actually fascinated with triangles and I use that to build his interest in learning numbers and languages too.
. That keeps him interested in the session
. He has a beautiful smile from ear to ear. A morning session with him and his beautiful smile makes a good start to my day at work
. Just love his never give up attitude
Hope all well in your mylot corner.

Thanks Arunimaji you are as brilliant as the special child. It is really a very specialized job to teach children who are slow learners. The child has done a brilliant work. You have read the mind of the child and grooming his or her interest. Continue the good work.

@arunima25 thanks Arunimaji you are doing a novel work. These children have special IQ. there is need of facilitators who can bring out their inherent talent and skills. So you are acting as those facilitator. Once these children shine in life you will feel how much you are content and the world will acknowledge your lovely contribution

@sathviksouvik Thank you. Over these thirteen years of job( I was in Biotechnology before that), I have helped so many children and I feel good that I have touched their lives and that of their families too in a special way. I feel blessed to be a part of their lives.

Thank you for your support and wishes. I am passionate about my work. And working with these children has taught me so many valuable lessons of life and I am still learning with them
. I often say it in my workshops and counseling sessions to teachers and parents that Assume intelligence and potential.
. Every child has it.

It's good that you are trying to use his interest in triangles to build other skills. I've just read a book by a woman who taught aboriginal children in remote communities and she used to do this too. She would try to find something they liked and then build on that with her lessons.

My mentor told me to follow the main mantra given by Madam Montessori. She said that follow the child. Observe the child carefully without any prejudices and the child will show you the path to be followed to help him learn.

@JudyEv When we make IEP( Individual education plan) for each child, voice of the child has to be included. Unfortunately many educators go with the diagnosis, tag and the ready made plans. They leave out the voice of the individual for whom they are making this plan. These children as such face so many challenges. Doing things that are not interesting to them makes learning even more challenging and hard for them

Yes. That`s right. We really need to be strict with small sickness. I hope for the sick child to get well soon.
It is nice to give them good learning activities

You are right. The virus is still lurking around and we have to keep everyone safe. There has been increase in number of cases here in the last few days. Though the severity and hospitalization is not much.
I do three activities. The first two are of my choice and if the child finishes them and is well behaved, he can choose the last one. This one was chosen by him.

@m_audrey6788 It has to get better everywhere. When it's a pandemic, no one is safe till everyone is safe

Yes, he is one with a great attitude and a very fun loving child. He has shown a good improvement in the last one year since he joined us. I feel that if it was physical classes last year, he would have improved more. In just few physical sessions, I feel that he has shown a lot of interest in learning.
. I wish to help him to be confident and reach his potential

@arunima25 So he is suffering from physical issues. I think that won't affect his learning as you say he is intelligent.

@aninditasen All these children except for mental retardation have good IQ but their physical and sensory issues limit their learnings too or at least make it slow and challenging.

I am passionate about my work. So, I enjoy the challenges too
. He is a bright child. There is no issue with his intelligence. Low muscle tone is the issue that has impacted his walk, eyesight, motor coordination and speech clarity. And so overall , he is slow at picking up. We have seen him getting more confident and that makes me happy.
