Driving? - Yes or No

The first mass-produced, practical car is credited to Karl Benz. The 3-wheeled vehicle was first built in 1885 and was powered by an internal-combustion engine. The engine weighed 220 pounds and was .75 horsepower. It was the most efficient engine of its kind at the time. Mass production began in 1888. Prior to that, a Jesuit missionary invented a steam-powered car in 1672; however, since it was only 2 feet long, it was considered a toy. When I was working I drove EVERYWHERE, including several times out-of-state. When I retired, my husband started taking me to doctors' appointments and on other errands; and I got used to not driving. Now I'm scared of driving and only drive when I absolutely have to. I'm so afraid of getting in an accident even though I've never had an accident or even a ticket. What about you? Do you drive? I still drive and quite like driving but mostly Vince drives as he is usually with me. On a long trip, we share the driving.

I am the world's worst passenger. I absolutely hate not being in control. When my wife and I go anywhere, even on long trips, she is not allowed to drive. If I am on the road I am behind the wheel. Period.

@LindaOHio My wife has a phantom break pedal and grabs the dash a lot. I wonder if that means she may be nervous too. lol

I never went to driving class in order to obtain a driving license. I know how to drive as I learnt from my husband but I do not like and I do not intend to spend money to have classes, pass the exams and obtain a license.

@LindaOHio I did not need a car when we lived in Milan, even less when we lived in Monte Carlo. Here it is convenient to go grocery shopping, but we are both retired, my husband drives me to the store.

I used to drive all over the country when Pretty was younger. We liked going places just to see what was there. I still drive, but we rarely go very far from home because Pretty is agoraphobic and starts having panic attacks and we're forced to come home. The furthest we go from home now is Springfield or Joplin, about 50 miles from home and only for appointments with specialists. We average going somewhere about once a week.

I'm sorry to hear about Pretty's agoraphobia. I get nervous when my husband drives because he doesn't drive as well as he used to.

@LindaOHio She's finally started talking to a therapist once a week to help her with the agoraphobia. (When she turned 26, Missouri law says I can't cover her under my insurance and I couldn't afford to pay $800 a month for insurance for her, so she had to stop therapy. Now that Missouri finally has to give basic insurance to people who can't work, she can go to a therapist again.) Pretty yells at me sometimes because I'm not driving like she thinks I should. Just because she's never gotten a driver's license doesn't mean I don't have to listen to her.

@DaddyEvil I'm glad you now have insurance for Pretty. My husband yells when I let him know he's about to have an accident. "I saw that!" Yeah, right. Have a good 4th of July weekend.

When I retired from my work I bought a second-hand Mitsubishi L300 Versavan. I tried to drive it with my son-in-law as my driving teacher..

I don't like driving but I still have to drive as my wife doesn't know it. Recently we went on a family your to a place which is 750 km away and I drove for 6.5 hours continuously. I feel driving a vehicle is a boring task.

When my husband is no longer able to drive, I will have to take over the driving. I dread the thought.

I don't mind driving at all. Taking the back roads cuts back on the traffic.
