Oh, and speaking of songs you may be sick of hearing (see today’s 1982 song), going back 50 years to 1972 I present today’s tune that you’ll probably hear on an oldies station today. Fifty years later. Music isn’t milk, so it doesn’t go sour after a certain date. Sometimes not even after hearing the song a million times. Case in point: today’s tune.
Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass
Ever wondered why this had a parenthetical title? Remember that Manilow syrup song “Mandy”? In 1971 it was a hit for Scott English …as “Brandy.” To avoid confusion, Looking Glass, a band formed at Rutgers University in New Jersey, gave theirs a longer title. Later Manilow re-named the “Brandy” he recorded as “Mandy.”
Confused? Oh, wait, I’m not through! I used this band in my “NOT One-Hit Wonder Bands You Think ARE” countdown a few years ago. That’s right, Looking Glass actually had another hit: “Jimmy Loves Mary-Ann.”
More than you need? Okay. Enjoy this terrific, enduring song one more time.

A playlist favorite for me. Songs about sailors and sailing are cool! See: Sloop John B., A Pirate Looks at Forty and Sail on Sailor for proof of that. Gee perhaps a favorite song trivia list, hmm...

@FourWalls I remember hearing this song being covered in a beachfront bar called The Beachcomber back in my heyday of Sunday Fundays in Seaside. I wish I could remember which group it was that sang it and exposed me to it for the first time.

@fourwalls Thanks for settling that. I shall quote you at the next quiz night when asked who sang Mandy and I say “Manilow, but Scott English … Brandy …” It’s Brandy that I remember better that Mandy.
