Frugal Living: Gourmet grilled cheese sandwich
July 3, 2022 8:29pm CST
This evening's dinner is, once again, quite simple. I was not in the mood for leftovers. Nor was I in the mood for food that feels like I'm watching my budget. Instead, I went for an upgraded version of a standard grilled cheese sandwich. The ingredients and my cost: Two slices rustic sourdough bread $0.30 2 oz ripened soft cheese (clearance) $0.49 1/4 ripe avocado $0.38 ~1 tbsp. Butter $0.08 Total cost: $1.25 I have paid $12.00+ in my past in restaurants for a grilled cheese sandwich of this quality. I have never used any type of ripened cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich, but this was delicious. I will try this again with Brie the next time I buy it. Photo is my own

@TheSojourner Omg - I go to Grocery Outlet every now and then too ! At first I didn't care for that place, but it grew on me. I like special finds there - especially if it is super cheap. I'll have to look into that cheese . . . I love cheeses that melt nicely .

I went to a place called grocery outlet. They had this semi-soft ripened cheese for $0.97 on sale because it was going off on the expiration date. Otherwise, I don't generally buy those things. And I don't know exactly what kind of cheese it was but it was like a brie.

@LadyDuck are those the same things that you get your gas ??? I remember in Italy we drove in to get gasoline and they always had a little coffee bar right next to it or part of the little store? And it was right off the main highway like on an overpass
@TheSojourner - Those places along the highways sell the worst sandwiches. As the highway are not free in Italy, if you go out and get back you pay (and it is expensive), people who want to eat and drink something have to stop at those restaurant/bars.
