If a Shooter Doesn’t Get You An Avalanche Will

Sunday a tragedy occurred in northeastern Italy when a chunk of glacier ice collapsed leaving seven people dead, five unaccounted for, and others injured. They are still looking for survivors. The ice came crashing into a group of hikers on the popular trail on the Marmolada glacier which is at over 3,300 meters and the highest mountain in the Italian Alps. To help there are helicopters and rescue dogs and many Alpine search and rescue specialists. The ice and snow that came crashing down literally swept people away. The Marmolada glacier is known as the “Queen of the Dolomites” and is the largest glacier in the northern Italian mountain range. It collapsed near Punta Rocca, a route usually taken to reach the summit. This appears to be the result of unusual climate warming as the temperatures that day reached a record high of 10 degrees C which is 50 degrees F. In recent years the glacier has been rapidly melting away so yes, be afraid of global warming.

I think in the US the risk of shooters far outweighs that of glaciers!

Mountain ranges are actually not safe places to travel through but young people don't seem to care about their life.

They have localized the "bodies", I fear no one is alive. I have been at the foot of the Marmolada dozens of times when I was young. Dad loved that area of the Domomites.

That was a terrible accident. We keep hearing of glaciers and iced mountains that have never melted wearing away due to warmer temperatures. Its nature at her worst.
