My favorite movie

I'm sitting here looking at the DVD of my favorite movie. Is it a great movie? No. Well, why is it your favorite then? Really, that's easier to answer. After all, favorite is an opinion isn't it? The movie is The Final Countdown from 1980. Kirk Douglas plays the captain of the U.S.S. Nimitz. Honestly, whenever I see Richard Basehart I always think he's playing a "poor man's" Kirk Douglas. Not that Richard Basehart is a bad actor, he just always seemed to be playing a role that might've gone to Douglas if it hadn't been on TV. (Granted the role had been played by Walter Pidgeon in the movie of the same name, I mean, it was an Irwin Allen production, give me a break !) Martin Sheen (back when he was pretty hot) and James Farentino, who could actually act. So, why is it my favorite? My favorite trope in science fiction is time travel. The original script would've made it so I hated the movie. However, when the studio approached the Navy about filming on the ship, they said the script had to be changed. I don't know which aircraft carrier they originally wanted to film on, but maybe they always wanted to film on the Nimitz. It did make for a nice short amusing scene when Senator Chapman getting all angry about Admiral Nimitz naming a ship after himself... I'm pretty sure they probably could've changed the name if they had really wanted to. As a little aside here, Admiral Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg, Texas and that is about an hour or so from Austin, Texas where I live. I have been in the museum there built in his honor. But that's not why I like the movie. The movie is my favorite because if an air craft carrier from 1980 had time traveled to Dec 6th, 1941, they would protected Pearl Harbor. The Captain would have said, they are going to attack Hawaii, and even if it isn't a State yet, it is still part of the United States. Sure, there would be someone worried about changing the future, but once the order was given, he obeyed. So, if you like science fiction, especially time travel, or even just Kirk Douglas or Martin Sheen, you might like this movie. Or have you seen it? Did you like it? Hate it? I may just have to watch it again... I've seen some fanfic, but not sure I'm going to be into them since I like the movie just the way it is.

If you can find a version of the movie, he did a good job in it. It is hard to believe he's in his 60s in this movie.

@marguicha me too... I laugh at these people who are now middle aged and even more so at the 'youngsters' who are surprised at the things we've seen...

He was a great actor, I don't know if it was available in either French or Italian... you'd probably have a better handle on where to find something like that... personally I thought the name was terrible despite the movie being good

@ElicBxn My husband told me that we have watched the movie in Italian (Countdown Dimensione Zero). I checked, in France they maintained the American title.

Time travel, it is a time travel movie about a 1970/80s air craft carrier, the U.S.S. Nimitz traveling back to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and what it should/would do.

@BarBaraPrz the Captain ordered the planes in the air to protect Pearl Harbor, but the time travel anomaly showed up and the planes were ordered back. There were even a few planes that had to fly through the anomaly to safely land on the ship on the other side of the time thing.
