I finally got around to watching "Annie Get Your Gun" the Mary Martin and John Raitt version. It was a good movie and it made me laugh several times throughout but I have to see it for what it was at the time in order to enjoy it. If I were to look at it from today's perspective I'd see a desperate woman who wants a man so much she is willing to dumb down her skills in order to keep him. He wants a woman that she isn't and she is willing to change herself to get him. He only wants her if she strokes his ego instead of loving her how she is. There is a part where he admits he loves her and is willing to put said ego aside but it's brief before he once again needs to show her up to prove he is the best. It is a cute movie and I did laugh a lot watching it and I had to see it for the time period it is and not from today's perspective. I love older movies but there's a lot of racism in old Hollywood and there is a lot of sexism but again that's the time period and while that doesn't necessarily make it right in a lot of ways they didn't know better. They were raised a certain way and that's just how things were. I love old movies but I do have to watch them with the understanding it is a different time. It's putting certain thoughts and perspectives to the side in order to enjoy the movie. I often feel conflicted while watching movies because I love how things seemed back then but then there's the part that realizes everything that was actually going on back then and realizes we often romanticize things from back then. I think it's ok to just enjoy a movie without overthinking it sometimes. I love old movies because the acting was often better and the quality of the movie was better and a lot of the plots were more original. They didn't have today's special effects so the acting had to be better in order to make up for it.

@sissy15 My pleasure. Was it a bit sexist? Oh, dear. I've never seen it. Glad you enjoyed it anyway. I'm glad you got some laughs out of it.

@sharonelton Yeah, just because of the way it had a woman giving up something she was good at so she could be with a man because the man had to be the best and didn't like being outdone by a woman.

Some of these movies look so much different now that community attitudes have changed so much.

I agree, but I have never gotten upset over them I just remember the time period they're from. You can't change history.

@sissy15 That's so true. It's pointless letting it worry you.

its still around (racism and sexism etc ) but people tend to try to say the right thing even if they dont actually believe it

Oh, I agree but it's not portrayed so openly now which isn't a bad thing in some ways and then in others, you have people you wouldn't suspect sometimes doing things because you never saw them coming. At least before you could tell a jerk was a jerk but on the other hand, it isn't quite as open for kids to pick up on it, obviously, some still will but before it was an entire mindset for most of the generation because they honestly didn't really realize the things they said or did were racism or sexism because that's just the way things were and they thought that was normal which is kind of scary.
