@Fiacre just made me think of this with his post I remember when I was a child, my Mum had some old Victorian children's books of the 'improving' variety (I still have them, but no time to read them at the moment) and I used to like to browse through those. They generally had a mixture of stories, little anecdotes, mottoes, things to make, observations on science and nature and the like… One thing that has always stuck in my mind is a little story about a traveller who met an old man, travelling on foot. When he asked the old man where he was going, he replied that he was just walking around the world. When asked why, the old man replied ‘When I die and go to Heaven, and God asks what I think of His creation, how can I reply if I haven’t seen any of it?’ All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.
An Australian lady aged 100 was interviewed on the radio and asked her secret for longevity. Her reply was “Eat well, sleep well and sh!t well”. She may well be...

Interesting way to see life. After all this old man was right, how can we answer if we have not seen? For what I have seen until now, everything made by nature is beautiful, humans spoiled everything.

The world is certainly full of wonders, and I am afraid of running out of time before I have seen enough!

It has been a long time since I have read any Victoria era books. Most of them seemed elaborately written and were a bit heavy on the moral message. Still, the fellow walking around the world seems a simpler message

Yes they can seem a bit moralising, but I still liked them when I was little. I still like to flick through them when I have time, but that isn't very often. They are often very educational which seems to be frowned on nowadays, but now children never learn to make things or anything like that, they just buy everything ready-made which I think is a big step backwards.

@Ronrybs Oh you'd be surprised, can't get my girls to put their books down! And they are often swapping books and recommendations with friends too. But there are so many books these days!

@Fleura What finally finished me on Victorian literature was Bram Stoker's Dracula. Liked most of the movies, though. I guess so many youngsters are glued in front of their phones and computers, reading isn't high on the list of things to do

And the 'old man' probably wasn't very old at all by today's standards.

@Fleura In Sense and Sensibility Colonel Brandon was considered old at 36.

@BarBaraPrz Considered old by a 17-year-old girl though! I remember being 18 and thinking 30 was old!

That’s a good answer. I’d say to anyone who has wanderlust, go for it. We don’t live but once.

It was a big assumption by the old man that he was going to heaven.

My mom had a severe dehydration event when she was 89 and after that all went downhill for her. By the time she was 98 she could no longer walk and because she couldn't hear she wasn't responding to anyone.

That's a nice little story. I think, at the moment, God would have more sense than to ask that question although it's not his creation that is at fault of course.
