@Fiacre just made me think of this with his post
I remember when I was a child, my Mum had some old Victorian children's books of the 'improving' variety (I still have them, but no time to read them at the moment) and I used to like to browse through those. They generally had a mixture of stories, little anecdotes, mottoes, things to make, observations on science and nature and the like…
One thing that has always stuck in my mind is a little story about a traveller who met an old man, travelling on foot. When he asked the old man where he was going, he replied that he was just walking around the world. When asked why, the old man replied ‘When I die and go to Heaven, and God asks what I think of His creation, how can I reply if I haven’t seen any of it?’

Yes they can seem a bit moralising, but I still liked them when I was little. I still like to flick through them when I have time, but that isn't very often.
They are often very educational which seems to be frowned on nowadays, but now children never learn to make things or anything like that, they just buy everything ready-made which I think is a big step backwards.

@Fleura What finally finished me on Victorian literature was Bram Stoker's Dracula. Liked most of the movies, though. I guess so many youngsters are glued in front of their phones and computers, reading isn't high on the list of things to do

And the 'old man' probably wasn't very old at all by today's standards.

@BarBaraPrz Considered old by a 17-year-old girl though! I remember being 18 and thinking 30 was old!

It was a big assumption by the old man that he was going to heaven.

My mom had a severe dehydration event when she was 89 and after that all went downhill for her. By the time she was 98 she could no longer walk and because she couldn't hear she wasn't responding to anyone.

A great line indeed...
