My daughters graduation party was so stressful

We invited 206 people to my daughters graduation party in mid June. 77 people confirmed they were coming and 81 attended. That number includes my husband and I and our kids etc. I was very happy with the number that showed up but was disappointed that I had guessed correctly that not a single person from my moms or my dads side of the family would come. It was the biggest party I have ever hosted and it also had the most things go wrong! It was so windy and chilly that day that the ballons on the balloon swag kept coming off. Worse was I didn’t know how to tie fishing line so I couldn’t get the swag up. We had quite a few decorations up but I had bought so much and it was going to be so gorgeous that I was so upset to not be able to do it how I planned in my head for months. About an hour into the party the police showed up. My daughters boyfriend was mad at my husband so he called and reported there was underage drinking going on at the party. The cops came and let us know what had been reported and no one underage had had any nor did they the rest of the day. When it came to the food mistakes there were a lot! I forgot to put crackers on the charcuterie board, I put the wrong flavor pudding in a dessert, we forgot about the salt potatoes sitting on the stove, 5 bags of ice were misplaced, we bought an extra keg that wasn’t needed and I forgot to give my mom the onions, tomatoes, lettuce and sandwich spread when she made the hoagies. Many more things went wrong it was just crazy one of the worst was my mom getting stung by a bee and winding up in the ER. Second runner up to being the worst was the cake. I bought a sheet cake for $95. It was whipped frosting and had a photo of my daughter on it. It was in air conditioning the whole way home and within 10 minutes of sitting on the table waiting to go in my sister in laws fridge the image blurred so bad you couldn’t see her face. I emailed them just so they were aware what happened and received a phone call the baker wanted to make another one for free but with buttercream frosting. I told my sister in law to keep it in her fridge and we would display the nice one. Thank god my dad drove an hour to get me that cake because when my sister in law looked in the fridge the next day the entire cake had a huge crack right across the center. I’ll never buy another cake from there again way to many problems over the years. This part my cost $2500 from start to finish. It wasn’t a perfect party but I hope my daughter enjoyed it and will look back on it with good memories knowing how hard I tried. Photo is unrelated to the post. It is a neat lamp I saw in a thrift store.

I'm sorry things didn't come up to your mental expectations. But I hope your daughter will remember the good parts of the day for the rest of her life. I'm sure everything was still wonderful. When we plan things, we can only hope everything turnes out the way we wish they would.

Oh my goodness - that is so much stress! I know throwing a huge party is not easy - too many things to think of and tend to (the stress part is never invited!). Hopefully all had a good time and didn't notice all the background things . . . happy graduation to your daughter!

@much2say it was mostly me just being so busy with people wanting this or that I felt like I barely had time to eat and then when I did get time my nerves were to bad to eat. Everyone said they had a good time though. I wish it had been better for my daughter with all the decorations being up and her boyfriend not having called the police but unfortunately I can’t get a do over.

@much2say he wouldn’t bring my daughter home to help set up her party the day before (and to go to a grad party) so after hours of her nagging him he brought her home. So later when he came to pick her up again my husband went up to his car and got in his face and said “you will bring her home right”. Her boyfriend was so mad over that that he called the cops. He didn’t hurt us he hurt his own girlfriend in the process. Yet she still goes there and went immediately after the party was over.

@shaggin You were trying to be the best host you could possibly be. I remember feeling like that when we had our wedding reception . . . we didn't have a wedding planner and did everything ourselves . . . it takes a lot to manage all that behind the scenes. "We" probably notice more than the guests. What's important is that your daughter and guests had a great time. I'm glad nothing became of the report . . . I wonder why the boyfriend even made that call.

I can vividly picture it on my head the efforts you have put in making the party possible. Kudos to you on that. The unexpected things that popped in before, during and after are the circumstances we cannot control, well, there were minimals that can be controlled but overall you did a great job to host a party for your daughter dear. She will remember that day for sure. Not all parents can show that love to their kids.

@jobelbojel I even forgot to take photos of the centerpieces. Mine were prettier then most other grad parties I have seen so that make me feel good but I wish I had a photo. Sadly some families cannot afford to give their children grad parties. My daughter and I have been to so many this year due to her having so many cousins and friends who graduated alongside her.

@1creekgirl I sure hope so. She had a good time but I can only imagine how awful she felt after her boyfriend called the police. It definitely had to put a big damper on her party for her

@RubyHawk thank you for your kind comment. Two years until I have to host another grad party so hopefully that one goes smoother. Having a little baby who likes to be held all the time didn’t make for a very easy time getting things ready ahead of time for this party.

That experience was very Fatique but I hope you see the good side behalf of that instances. Sometimes we cannot control the time flow we have. There’s moment when we want to experience Memorable Circumstances in a positive way,but in reality there’s a negative moment appear that we cannot control.. If we just decide, ofcourse we don’t want to experience that kind of things, but sad to say that the reality. But beside of the negative moment i hope you see the good or positive side in that occasion,I know it’s hard but if we do our best to look the good side in a negative instance I guess it help us not to overthink.

@Cha_20 something always goes wrong at anything I host but usually just one thing. This was something going wrong right after another. I cried a few times and was sick to my stomach with nerves for two days afterwards. I’m so glad it’s all over.

@Tina30219 thank you. It still upsets me as there’s no doing it over or anything and this was so important to me. She enjoyed it all though and said it was great because she didn’t know what it was going to be like so she didn’t expect anything more then it was.

Sorry for what happened but congratulations on you daughter's graduation anyway. With that number of people I believe there's a big chance of things going wrong. If I were to host such a party and with that money, I would probably just hired a party organizer and let them do the catering and take care of everything so I could just sit back, relax and concentrate on hosting.

@louievill we don’t have any party organizers around here but if we did I can imagine it would have cost me hundreds more. My sister in law did that as a job for a few years but it wasn’t local it was at a hotel an hour away. Catering would have cost me an extra $1000.

Sounds like a National Lampoons movie. That’s a lot of people to cater for. More like a wedding than a graduation. I am sure when you would look back in later years it won’t seem so bad. Did your daughter enjoy it? That’s the main thing.

@Orson_Kart yes she had a good time. It was so chilly people didn’t stay as long though or it would have been more fun for her. My husband wanted to have it catered so we could relax but I didn’t want to spend so much extra money.

Sorry, you got so many things wrong at the party but then people learn from the mistakes. You took a fair decision not to buy a cake from this baker again.

@sjvg1976 yep I learned my lesson with the bakery. I’ll definitely know for my stepsons grad party what to do and what not to do.

That's really sad that so many things went wrong after you went to so much trouble. I guess at least it would be memorable although perhaps not in the way you'd like.

@akanetuk she graduated summa cume laude which is amazing. She would have been salutatorian though if she had kept up her grades and not slacked off so bad since meeting the guy she is dating. So that has been hard to see. Ps I had to change the spelling for cume as it said it was a bad word lol.
