Alexa Obsessed??

Let me preface this by saying today is Prime Day at Amazon. My daughter already has stuff in her cart and will be taking advantage of the "deals" The one thing she particularly wants is Alexa for the car. I don't disagree since she does 99% of the driving and does distance driving since none of her friends live nearby. She said she needs it so who am I to argue and she's paying for it not me. Anyway, once Alexa became popular she started with one for her room and one for our living room. Now we have one in all the bedrooms, two of the bathrooms, her office, and the kitchen. Each one is programmed for radio stations, playlists etc as well as being able to answer whatever question you might want to ask. Just say Alexa "turn on Joe" and it will turn on my coffee mug warmer plus I can turn on the light just by asking. Even our Christmas tree is voice activated so we can turn the lights on and off without having to get up or use the remote. My daughter loves technology and I'm just an old Fogey who doesn't understand how most of it works.

Don't know about old fogey, I am not keen on these devices taking over so much of our life. Besides they are listening all the time!

@Ronrybs Exactly and do you know what happened in Italy? Hackers registered what people said in private moments and sold the registrations. The worst was for those who also had cameras installed.

@Ronrybs My husband has a stick on his laptop camera, hackers capture images through our laptop computers.

@LadyDuck Didn't know about the cameras, another reason not to have one

Listen, it is better if you do not know how Alexa exactly works, or you would be scared to talk with all those "hears" listening what you say.

@Marilynda1225 At least you do not risk to be asked for a ransom to delete what they registered.

@LadyDuck they probably know I wouldn't have any ransom money

I think whomever is listening on my Alexa would fall asleep. It might work for anyone with insomnia

Alexa for the car sounds interesting. I have one item in my cart now, which is 8 percent less but more than the last time I bought... I am iffy on buying another.

I didn't know you could get one for the car but it would make traveling more convenient if you have the ability to listen to whatever you want rather than a radio station.

Our son and daughter-in-law use Alexa to play white noise, that is what the twins are used to sleeping to. Boy......have they ever got alot to learn about music.

@Marilynda1225 I don't relate to the white noise, it doesn't sound soothing to me, cannot understand why some respond positively to it and others not.

I have one next to my bed and use the white noise function too. Otherwise I have it playing music

I know it's prime day, but I don't have enough gift cards to get anything I want to get. I don't have Alexa.

So 'old Fogey' is the term? What does 'Fogey' mean? I'd like to know because I am one, too! :-)

I have a small unit in my kitchen and really like using it but my husband dislikes it so I don't use it a lot when he is home. I've never thought to put one in a car before.

I still find it incredible that Alexa can do all these things. It is a bit scary though. My friend's Alexa (or it might have been Siri - are they one and the same?) answered a question that the TV asked.

That's funny and scary at the same time! Two technical devices talking to each other. No human beings needed.

What do you use to mylot? I suppose a laptop desktop or a mobile. So you are using technology in your daily life and know about it.

@aninditasen computers became popular when I was still working so I basically learned then but I never had the chance to take a course. I have the most trouble when something isn't working right and I need help so I rely on my daughter.

@Marilynda1225 I did take a nutshell course in computers quite a few years back and did content writing and online teaching till 2019. I can't call myself an expert in technology however as the world of technology is an ocean and there's a lot to learn.

Yes. Younger generations are really good with technology and it is nice to have them introduce it to older people to enjoy

You made me look up the term 'fogey' and found this, "In 1811, an Old Fogey was a nickname for an invalid, wounded soldier; derived from the French fougueux (“fierce or fiery”)."
• United States
13 Jul 22
that's interesting that you found it meaning an invalid, wounded soldier whereas I've never heard of that being used in reference that way before.
