How can it be going dark already??

Last month the weather here was quite cool, but now it has really heated up. The days certainly feel like summer when the sun is beating down from a cloudless blue sky. But in the evenings it is already starting to feel like summer is on the way out. I mean how can it be going dark at only 9:30 pm?? I love the long summer days and I like it even better if I get a chance to go to the north of Scotland (or even Norway!) where it’s still broad daylight at 11 o’clock at night. Here, although we are a lot further south, at the height of summer I am often still gardening in daylight at 10 pm. But midsummer’s day is more than three weeks ago already and now it feels like it’s all downhill from here to winter again : ( All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

Around here as the sun goes down, it seems that wispy clouds appear and we get that classic red sky at night. Still, far too hot and I am not looking forward to the beginning of next week

We're lucky, we seem to be having overcast conditions at least part of every day, which makes a huge difference.

@Fleura Same here, it was overcast most of the morning, today and yesterday, but the sun is relentless and the afternoons are far too warm.

Apart from the cold, I think Europe and England has the best weather.

I've always found it odd that we get the longest day of the year in the UK before summer has really started. I know it can be explained by our latitude, earth's orientation relative to the sun etc. but it still just feels odd.

It's the names that get me - how can the so-called first day of summer be the same day as midsummer day?

@Fleura Blimey you're right. I never even thought of that. I did once hear that the meteorological summer is different to the actual summer. No idea how/why and was never interested enough to find out if I'm being completely honest.

Ah,it is still broad daylight at 11 P.M. It is just about the polar day ! Here the days begin to shorten after the Summer Solstice,on the contrary ,the days lengthen after the Winter Solstice.

We only lost 5 minutes in the evening from June 21st that is very little and I cannot see the difference. Unfortunately we already lost 15 minutes in the morning and there I see the difference.

Well here it is 7:30 PM and the sun is still out but by 9 PM it will also be dark already but still, I like that the days are longer in the summer, I mean when the autumn and winter is here it is dark by 6 and I certainly do not like that,

Yes, here it is dark by 4pm in winter, so working people often have to go to work in the dark and go home in the dark and never see daylight unless they get to go outside at lunch time!

Yeah, the nights are getting longer but here the afternoons will get up to at least 37c for the next week or more.

We don't have such long evenings here but I loved it in Ireland. Despite the late hour, I never felt particularly tired while it was daylight despite being up for hours.

Thanks for sharing the weather conditions in your place. Here in the Philippines, it all rains the entire evening. Until now, it's already 5:29am of Wednesday.
