No doubt if you turn on a “classic rock” or “80s” station on the radio or satellite today’s song is bound to show up sooner or later. You might even hear it in a restaurant playing “oldies.” Yeah, “oldies.” This song is now 40 years old. Wow. Here’s another one from 1982.
Rock the Casbah - The Clash
Yeah, I feel old now. I saw these guys on this tour. This song also helped me explain to a friend the difference in “disco” and “dance”: if you like a song, it’s “dance.” If you don’t like it, it’s “disco.”
The Clash were punk, no doubt, but there were elements of all sorts of world music in their sound. You can hear rap (“The Magnificent Seven”), reggae (“Revolution Rock”), and even pop (“Hitsville UK”) throughout their angry-as-heck lyrics.
This song, while dealing with the Islamic Revolution’s ban on western music, could resonate with Americans who were dealing with people like the genesis of the Parents Music Resource Center or who were old enough to remember Elvis being banned for shaking his hips or sounding “too black.”
That “boogie sound” wasn’t stopped, though.
Rock the Casbah

From Combat Rock, 1982
(Today’s 1972 song: “Run to Me”)
The in crowds say it’s cool:

@snowy22315 — yeah, one of the benefits of being old. I got to see all the cool bands. Cheaply, too.

When I was in high school one of the upper classmen had a band that did a cover of this song.
That's my first memory of this song. Being sung (very badly, in that way silly high school bands can only achieve) in the basement of a Church of Christ by a band called Bump on a Pickle.

Wow, and they weren’t excommunicated for doing a punk song in a church basement?????

@much2say — whoever posted that on You Tube as “Charlene” needs their ears cleaned, not you.

Actually, it’s the Arab word sharif, which is similar to our sheriff in meaning.

I'm familiar with this song because my kids would blast 80s music when they were growing up

@PhredWreck — I was taking a musician friend around Cincinnati for a quick tour of some of the music history before his concert. He only knew me as a country geek, so he almost apologetically told me the act he was playing with (Reverend Horton Heat) wasn’t exactly “country.” I said, “Hey, I saw the Clash live.” He realized there was another side to me. Then he jumped out of the car in fear.

Gee, how do you REALLY feel?
The Clash was one spectacular band. Someone in the record company’s PR department called them “the only band that matters,” but they backed it up!

@AliCanary — one of my favorite lines of theirs: “you have the right to free speech as long as you’re not dumb enough to actually try it.”

I only know “I’ve Never Been to Me” from the joke David Letterman used it in (regarding how to get rid of house guests who won’t leave), and given the title I never really wanted to hear it. But the word isn’t Charlene, it’s sharif.

There’s another rock today that may have gotten under your “rock.”
