A Saturday morning church clean up

Our church that burned, Siloam UMC, had a clean up day this morning. Lots of people showed up to help, even five Mexican workers that worked for free. Thank the good Lord for younger and stronger backs! A local business owner hired them at no charge to the church. The pews were removed and cleaned as well as possible. The biggest removal was the steeple on top of the roof of the sanctuary. One of the church members has a large crane that got it down. BTW, if you ever need to clean wood that was in a fire (and I pray you don't), spray oven cleaner works pretty well. The worst part though is the fumes, so be careful. The funniest part of the day was when the piano was being moved on a flat bed truck to the containers in the area across from the church. Two men were holding on to the piano and another church member was playing it as they drove! We even had a couple from Georgia who were riding by and stopped. They go to a United Methodist Church somewhere in Georgia. It wasn't the usual kind of clean up day, that's for sure. We still attend services at another church, but Siloam will always be home to me. Hope your Saturday was more fun than mine.

I am sorry that your church burned. How wonderful though, that the community came together to help out. I hope that in time you congregation will be able to rebuild a new church home.

@Dena91 I think they're hoping to possibly build the new sanctuary to look like the old one. But lots of decisions to be made.

They're planning to build a new church. Thank the Lord for good insurance.

@1creekgirl That is good that they will rebuild. A Baptist church in our county was struck by lighting a few years back and it took them about 2 years to rebuild. The new building is beautiful.

Unfortunately, it will be torn down (what's left of it after the fire) and a new church will be built.

@jstory07 Yes, that church was 146 years old although it has been remodeled and added on over the years.

Terrible that the church had a fire, but it is nice to see people coming together to make the situation better. As they say, sometimes even a disaster can make the day brighter in the end.

@1creekgirl I just think it is good people coming together for good reasons to be good people. But of course I am not a religious man.

We go to church every Saturday too. But this week skip because I want to rest more. My cough hasn't gone fully yet.

What a great community effort. The pianist obviously added a lighter "note".

You sound like you had fun with it. While it's tragic that it burned, I am thankful to learn it's sound enough to even be cleaned.

We salvaged the pews, a picture of Jesus, and the communion table and rail.

I hope that it will be rebuilt soon. Your church's name is so powerful. Siloam where Jesus healed the blind man.

Despite the sadness of the occasion, it was possibly quite an enjoyable occasion. People can be very generous with the time and labour - as you were.
