Running the Dehumidifier

Japan

So far this summer, I have been able to avoid using the air conditioning (cooling down the air) setting on our wall aircon/heater. For those of you who don't know, there is no such thing as central heating or cooling in Japan. We just adjust whatever rooms we are in. I decided to try running the aircon on dehumidify, because it exhausts the heat, unlike the free-standing dehumidifiers that just make things hotter. It has worked really well! With our humidity around 80%, and taking it down inside to 60%, it is very livable! I am also saving on electric bills! Another thing is that I bought a small light that has a fan inside for the bedroom ceiling socket. (Our ceilings are not strong enough for actual ceiling fans.) I adjusted it to point at the bed at night and sometimes I'm actually cold! What are your tricks for saving on electric bills in the hot weather?

You are right that the free-standing dehumidifiers just make things hotter. I try to use a fan instead of ac. But when the temperature and humidity are really high, I have to turn on the ac to cool down the temperature and reduce the humidity level.

Have you tried freezing a 2-liter bottle of water and putting it in front of the fan?

@Beestring I don't think so since it will be closed. It might even collect some humidity from the air.

@petatonicsca No, haven't tried it. I think it helps to cool down the temperature, but wonders if it will raise the humidity level.

I have no tricks. I just use the central A/C as much as needed.

Having central air is certainly useful.

I have windows opened and a fan on in whatever room I am in.

Oregon, sure. I used to live in the PNW and that is what I did (Vancouver, BC)

Those are good tips. In our other place we used to close up the house as soon as it looked like getting hot. Keeping the house shut up with the curtains closed helped keep the place cool.

I do that too. My Japanese neighbors think I'm strange because here you're supposed to let the sun and breeze in.
