New Times, New Prices, Discount Stores Get Creative

It is funny to me when I think of stores that branded themselves in their store names that eventually have to resort to rebranding themselves a bit as times change and the original concept no longer works.
Like The Dollar Tree, for example. For years everything was pretty much $1 or less in the store, and few things were under $1. But of course, for a variety of reasons the stores raised their price to $1.25.
Although they have not done much rebranding. You just know that everything is now $1.25, and customers don't seem to have minded the change much.
One thinks back to stores like the Five and Dime or 99 Cents or Less. They did not have as easy a time of rebranding.
There is also Five Below, a store named because everything in the stores were $5 or less. They have not changed their name, but they have changed their branding—such as their logo which has now been changed to, "Hot stuff. Cool prices." A lot of items at Five Below are now $10 or less.
The interesting thing is that stores like this, even with their higher prices and rebranding, during these high inflationary times, will fare the best performance of any other retail stores during this time.
But over time, bargain stores always tend to do well for obvious reasons. Everyone likes a good deal.

I've never seen anything at The Dollar Tree that was under a $1. Everything was always $1. No need to ask a worker how much something is, which I liked.

Do you shop at Five Below? I've been there a few times out of curiosity but never found anything I'd be tempted to buy.

@porwest I guess it's a good thing if there is little you want or need.

@lovebuglena Most of what I find they sell there is a lot of trivial junk. I mean, MAYBE if you're looking for a phone cover or a charging wire you can find some good deals. But most everything else is just...junk.

Our Dollar Tree now has prices from $1 to $5. I hate it.

@porwest Yes, it's been a Dollar Tree for years. I can see raising their prices to a little over a dollar, but having items up to 5 dollars will be a mistake, I think. Now they won't be much different than Dollar General or Family Dollar.

@1creekgirl Interesting. I was always under the impression that The Dollar Tree stores always operated identical to each other. All of the Dollar Tree stores I have ever been to in my area were always $1, but now are $1.25 of course.
Even if I check them online, everything on the site is $1.25.
If that's the course for the rest of the stores, I may reconsider shopping there.

I love getting a good deal and hearing about others snagging a good deal.

@porwest My MIL couldn't pass up a good deal. She bought things she didn't need.

@LindaOHio Thus, most of those "good deals" were probably not good deals. They were an excuse to spend money that she probably could have better put to use somewhere else. Which is the problem MOST broke people face.
As I always say, money and the ability to build wealth is NEVER an income issue. It is ALWAYS a spending issue.

Agreed, wish we had more in Hawaii. I know of just Daiso, 1.50 or as marked. During time, 2 dollar store left island, then Daiso came. Luckily for us, Daiso staying, so far, anyway.

@oahuwriter From what I can find, Daiso is a Japanese company with stores in California, Texas, Washington, New York, New Jersey, and Nevada. It does not list any in Hawaii, but obviously they are there.
I believe, according my research, the first one was opened in Honolulu in 2018 and since then 2 more stores were added for a total of 3 in Hawaii.
It is a privately held company operating in several countries.

They built their entire business on the "everything is a dollar" concept and remained that way for 25 years before they made the change. Now items are all the way up to $10 depending on what it is. Before you know it, it will be just another Dollar General or Family Dollar store where practically nothing costs a dollar. lol

You stated it perfectly. I think customers accepted the Dollar Tree's price increase because paying 25 cents more still is better than the increases seen in grocery, clothing, gas, cars, electronics and other products.

It seemed reasonable considering they had not raised prices since the beginning of their business and some things at even 25 cents more are still bargains. Granted, there are a lot of things I do not buy there. But of the things I do, the $1.25 is still economical.

Man. I have a whole other impression of you now.
