My latest repair project

A couple of years ago I bought a free-standing hammock through Ebay. The winning bid was £20, but when I went to pick it up the seller said he had found a small tear in the actual hammock part and said I could have it for free. We compromised at £10 and it’s lasted OK since then. At first the tear was only small so I just didn’t worry about it. Then it got a bit bigger and I tried to repair the tear with a patch using a bit of leather I had (the hammock was made out of some sort of plasticy imitation fabric). But it didn’t look very good and eventually it fell off, so I had to accept that I needed to replace the hammock. I searched online for a replacement for that type but couldn’t find one. Of course not knowing the original maker or supplier didn’t help. I thought I would have to throw it out, but then I found that I could remove the ‘fabric’ from the rods that hold it at the ends, suggesting I might be able to make a replacement. But then I couldn’t find any suitable fabric anywhere. Lots of nice outdoor canvas was available online, but only in widths suitable for a deckchair so that was much too narrow. Then recently I was able to visit my favourite fabric place, and they had outdoor canvas in stock, in double the width I needed, and it was on sale at half price! So just over two metres of that cost about £10, and since it was double the width required I cut it in half down the middle. Within half an hour I had replaced the hammock and I still have enough to do the same again in a year or two if necessary. Very pleased Now all I need is some time to actually lie in it!! I always get more satisfaction out of repairing things than buying them new

Me too! Making things that don't work, work again, is one of the most satisfying things it is possible to do!

@Fleura mind you I do end up throwing some failures away lol, they dont make electrical things easy to repair and often have a screw that you need a specialist tool for which is a bit naughty

@58lordstreet I know, I had a real saga repairing a bread maker! Even bought a special set of screw drivers in all sorts of funny shapes!

That's a great repair and I hope you find time to lie in it soon. But don't go to sleep in the sun or you'll end up like a beetroot - which isn't a good simile, as beetroots are more purple than red. So don't end up like a tomato.

Did you know that there are purple tomatoes, brown ones and even yellow and white ones?

@BarBaraPrz Never come across white ones! I have eaten (and grown) red tomatoes, yellow ones, orange ones, stripey ones and the dark brown ones as well as the more usual red types. Also yellow beetroot.

I'm definitely staying in the shade as much as possible! That red colour doesn't go with my hair!

I have some fun outdoor canvas somewhere, but no hammock stand. Actually I have a couple of places I could enjoy one. Maybe next year.

Good job. What l would have done is patch the tear in the beginning before it could get bigger.

I did try that, but it didn't last all that long because it was made of funny material.
